Why is my computer crashing after I installed my SSD?

MacBook Pro 13" 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo (SD/FW) - MacBookPro5,5 with 8 GB of RAM.

I've been experiencing problems with my Macbook Pro, ever since I replaced my optical drive with an SSD.

The problem occurs at seemingly random times, and I'm unable to pinpoint if there is any particular software combination that causes it. I've also looked for consistencies in the crash log report, but I don't seem to find anything there.

Any suggestions of where to start, to diagnose problem would be appreciated!

I suspect you're hitting a known issue with this model. Here's the note that OWC has with their optical drive HD holder OWC Data Doubler. It really doesn't matter who's carrier you use the issue is within the system not the adapter.

"2008/2009 MacBook/MacBook Pro 13", 15", and 17" models. (Model IDs: MacBookPro5,1; 5,2; 5,3; 5,4; 5,5 and MacBook5,1; 6,1; 7,1) While a 6G SSD does function, it will only do so at SATA Revision 1.0 (1.5Gb/s) speeds rather that the SATA Revision 2.0 (3.0Gb/s) speed the machine can deliver. Should owners of these machines desire another SSD option, the Mercury Electra™ 3G SSD does run at the full SATA Revision 2.0 (3Gb/s) specification."

Basically, you'll need to locate a fixed SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) SSD. As I suspect you have a SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) drive.

That sounds right.. I have the SanDisk Extreme Pro SDSSDXPS-480G-G25 2.5 which runs at 6.0 Gb/s.

Besides being a nuisance, will the crashing have a negative impact on my machine, or is this something I can just ignore?

Because of all of the issues trying to get a second drive in MacBook Pro's we gave up and went a different direction. We went with SSHD hybrid drives like Seagate laptop SSHD. There we got the zip of a SSD and the deep storage of a HD. Presently we are still evaluating Western Digital Black2 dual drive. Both could offer what you're looking for with the stability you need. I would recommend going that direction.
