Is it possible to upgrade Bluetooth to 4.0 in Mid 2010 Pro?

Hi,

Since the rumours say that Handoff feature will require BT 4.0, I was curious if it is possible to update/change my bluetooth card in MacBook Pro 17" Unibody (Mid 2010, A1297, 2.66 GHz) to BT 4.0?

Yes, the news is NO you can't upgrade this model (see below)

No is still no Just not possible.

Bluetooth is a hardware based digital-wireless transceiver. The new Bluetooth is an updated Bluetooth-hardware system. Apple does not provide a upgrade for this hardware. BLUETOOTH SMART = New Hardware https://www.bluetooth.com/what-is-blueto... CGI Computer Wares - Mac Guru

yes, but not really. there is a handoff enabling program (continuity tool) to enable it on the software side, but there are limitations and it is automatically reversed after software updates and sometimes restarts ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ think the forum in the answers have more details/solutions

At this time point the answer is No. Apple has linked Yosemite directly to the system ID string so these features are limited to certain models not the given Bluetooth hardware it could have been upgraded or added (this could change). Roberto, This system uses a discrete Bluetooth board Vs the combo board the newer MacBook Pro 15" use which is what was being described in the thread. Sadly, there is no updated Bluetooth adapter for this system.

さんによる

Does this laptop not use the same card as the 15' pro? Which, according to the people in this thread (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.p...) can work?

さんによる

No it does not use the same part. Thats the point it doesn't. The 17" mode uses two adapters one for WiFi and the other Bluetooth. The 15" model uses a combo card which by chance was upgraded to BT 4 LE in the newest versions of the systems which is why it is able to be upgraded.

Hey guys,

I'm not sure this solves your issues. I found this on github a few weeks ago and it worked great.

If you happen to be on the beta release program for Yosemite, you'll have to re-run the install script every time you upgraded. I haven't seen a performance decrease nor a battery life drop. Problem is that it requires an extra bluetooth dongle, certainly precious resource on these laptops.

PM me if you have questions.

Connor, This is an older post before the Continuity Activation Tool came out. You are correct it offers a way to get handoff working using a BL dongle. FYI it even works with the released version of Yosemite! We have a few iMac's and this was the ticket for them.

I am researching the same thing. I was thinking of purchasing this and using the continuity tool to enable the feature.

My question is slightly different however, I want to enable airdrop between my phone and my laptop. Will this work for this type of solution?
