My knobs are not the handy "D" type, but slot-type. The shaft is operable with a standard screw driver, an awkward act for tool-challenged household members. ''Universal" type knobs don't seem to work.

Stick a couple of picks in the slot and super glue into place. A large paper clip would also work.
