how to fix apple error code 29
iPhoneの5代目となるiPhone 4S。このデバイスの修理は比較的簡単で、スクリュードライバー、開口ツールと忍耐が必要です。GSM/CDMA / 16, 32, 64 GB / 白と黒
Hi All,
Same for my iPhone 4S. WiFi upgrade to iOS9.3 from 9.2.1 failed/stalled. I then tried connecting to iTunes as the phone was stuck in recovery mode. It still failed about 2/3 of way through and left me with a phone that was not functional.
After 2 hours (over two days) with Apple Tech on Chat they booked my an appointment at the local Apple store. I was not happy as the phone worked perfectly until this upgrade!
Given error 29 is related to the battery or battery connection (by all accounts). The new battery (non Apple) which I installed 3 weeks ago and replaced with an original Apple battery. I also scrubbed the battery connector terminal on the motherboard with a soft toothbrush and rubbing alcohol.
I reconnected the phone to iTunes (old battery) and the upgrade was able to complete. I then replaced the old battery with the new non genuine one I had removed earlier and the phone is working fine.
I don't believe my new battery was faulty nor was there a hardware issue as such, but possibly the iOS9.3 is sensitive to non genuine parts in an old phone!
Good luck if you come across a similar problem as this may help you.

Hi This is exactly what happened to my 4s including an hour chat with Apple Tech and her booking me into local Apple Shop for a mechanical fault find. Rather I took out the non genuine battery and refitted the old genuine , restore then completed and phone worked fine.

Great solution. Perfect! Change battery with original and returns your old (now original).

Can confirm that this trick works. I had huge problems to upgrade from 9.3.4 to 9.3.5. Got error 29 all the time until I got the idea (before I read all these posts actually) to replace my newly replaced battery, with the old one. The upgrade went smoothly with no problem at all with the old original battery. I'll revert to the newer battery after the upgrade...

Replacing the replacement battery with an OEM one fixed my issue too. One of the really nice features of the 4s was how easy it is to just remove a couple of screws, slide off the back, remove a few more screws, loosen a connector, and just replace the battery. It is too bad that Apple has focused way TOO much on thin is in instead of practical and functional. It is not environmentally friendly when products that have been easily repaired in the past now have everything soldered and glued to so that they are considered disposable when a part breaks :-(.

just fixed my 4S (at least for now) after replacing battery. After plugging in to charger, I got the dreaded plug into iTunes symbol. After trying to restore numerous times to no avail, I plugged back in the old battery. I was than able to do a factory restore. replaced the old battery with the Ifixit battery again and it is working so far.
Hope I don't have to do this again and again....
the iphone iphone could not be restored unknown occurred (29)

yes what is this problem
I had this problem on a non jailbroken iphone 4s tried the above to no avail .
Basically if you've exhausted all the other fixes... changing the battery, removing firewall, antivirus, editing host file etc etc. Then check the last line of your itunes restore log if it says something like...'RamrodErrorr domain/3ea: update_gas_gauge: gasgauge_swupdate returned -1' ... Ifixit has the answer and more details here.....
Small component broken from the logic board .
In my case on a (very)close inspection it's a capacitor.. that's missing!?!.
Hope this helps someone as this info took me best part of a week to find!

Please do NOT waste your time downloading the link in "this way" from blacchyna66. You will download Wondershare Dr. Fone app. It looks like one can fix their phone by clicking on "More Tools" and "iOS recovery". The trial version will tell you that selecting a ipsw file already downloaded is for registered users. New users think if they take the time to download the file, they can then use iOS recovery. Not so. When the user clicks on "Start Fix", a message that this tool is restricted to registered users only will display. Why not say that up front? I will NEVER buy this program for that reason. It is deceptive and misleading. Part of me wonders if it would work because it may bypass that iTunes software since it seems to restore the software on its own, but I will never find out. Personally, I think it's the battery. I think Apple should be barred from practices like this that make a phone unusable. If the owners wants to use a replacement battery, then just let the owner assume the risk. Why let the battery work all this time and then brick the phone? I no longer have the original battery and am not sure I can get an OEM one.

It is not environmentally friendly when products that have been easily repaired in the past now have everything soldered and glued to so that they are considered disposable when a part breaks :-(. I do not think I would have convinced someone to let me pull the screen off one of the new phones (iphone 5 and up) and hope the screen doesn't break to borrow a battery...
