Chip burnt on the logic board, but it still works!

Recently when i was using the MacBook (Late 2011, 13', 2.4MHz i5) without it been plugged in, it turned off all of a sudden with the "chich" sound and a puff of smoke came out. I thought my Mac died. But when i turned it on, it stated to work fine (checked with diagnostics, everything worked fine).

So, Just to be sure i took it to the apple service centre, and they showed me that a chip on the logic board (below the fan) have been burnt. but the wonder is, the mac works fine. it would take me around $650+ for me to replace the logic board. can anyone please tell me if this is something i can live with and not replace the logic board ?

I have added the an image which shows the chip as i remember by the red-arrow. it will be either one of them for sure. (i dont have a pic because the macbook is with apple at the moment, trying to figure out if this is claimable by apple care)

Hashan Ranatunga, add an image to your question so we can see what you see. Right now it is very difficult to determine which "chip" you are looking at :-)

Looks more like an isolated component than an IC. I think we'll wait till you need to know for sure. Good for you if it is covered by Apple.

Since we don't have the schematics for your board it's hard to know the function of the faulty component but test everything that's connected near the damaged IC (optical drive, airport, backlight keyboard, etc). Also, it would be important to find the cause of the damage. Something shorted under the bottom panel, check if any screw is missing somewhere and could have shorted the board. If you're lucky the damaged component is not a critical element for the board operation and is located at the end of the circuit so it doesn't open the circuit.

Apple didn't get back to me on if this is covered by the warantee. They gave me an indication and said that burns to the logic board are not covered by the warantee. :( which will cost me $ 650+ for a logic board replacement.

If all the features and functionality are working fine, do you think this is something I can live with ?
