Toshiba Satellite A210 will not turn on
The screen is black and plugging in the laptop does not turn it on.
Check the power adapter
Connect the power adapter to ensure there is power being delivered to the system. If this does not work see the battery replacement guide. If none of this works the AC adapter may be broken and replacement will be necessary.
Check the battery
Make sure the batter is fully connected to the laptop. Refer to our guide for instructions on how to remove and place the battery properly here: Battery Removal/Replacement
The screen is black
The laptop turns on but the screen is completely black or very dim.
The blacklight may be off. This can be resolved by making sure the brightness setting is higher than its lowest setting.
The system is overheating
The laptop feels constantly, abnormally hot.
Shut the system down
Shut down the laptop to allow for cooling. Wait a couple minutes (or until the system feels cooler) to turn on the laptop.
Make sure the fan is running
Place hand against the vent to make sure air is flowing. If the problem continues there is a problem with the internal fan. If so, refer to the replacement guide for the internal fan located here: Fan Removal/Replament
The keyboard is unresponsive
The keys are either stuck down or do not function at all.
Keys are stuck
The keys may be jammed so in order to fix this issue, you might simply want to just clean the keyboard. In order to clean it you can take a cloth and wipe down the keys. You can also try compressed air where you take an air compressor that is designed for computers and then aim it in between the keys that are stuck. If this does not work then you may take out the keys that are stuck and clean them (dish soap works). Allow them to completely dry before placing back onto keyboard.
*Remember power supply must be removed and the system must be shut down.
Make sure keyboard is connected
To see if the keyboard is connected you can refer to this guide to access it internally: Keyboard Removal
Once access is granted, check to see if wire is dislodged. If so, reconnect. Follow repair guide in reverse order to reconnect all required components. If problem persists a replacement keyboard will be necessary and the guide can be used to do so.
System is running slowly
Applications take a long time to open or overall slow system response time.
You could have too many applications open at once. Check your start-up files that are opening when you turn on your computer. You may want to have some not automatically opening.
The laptop may need a break, so rebooting the computer may help. Shut the system down and wait a few minutes before turning the computer back on.
In this case there may be a problem with the Random Access Memory (RAM). If the computer is running much slower than when it was new, either replacing or upgrading the RAM is advisable. Refer to the guide here for more information on replacing the RAM: RAM Removal/Replacement
No sound is coming out of the computer or speakers.
Check volume is on
This issue can simply be resolved by checking if the volume is up loud enough or not. Common mistake is leaving it too low or on mute. Go into the volume section of the computer and check settings to make sure it is at desired volume. If this is not the solution you may have a broken speaker, in that case it must be sent in for repairs.
Make sure proper speaker is selected
Within the computer settings, under Control Panel, there is a menu called “Sound.” There is a submenu here called “Speakers” and in this submenu there are options to select different speakers if there are any. Make sure the correct speaker is selected by changing the speaker that is selected. Click “apply” and check to see if any sound is coming out of the speakers.
Discs are not being read properly
The computer is not properly reading disc or error message occurs.
Removal of dust may amplify the disc reading process. In order to remove the dust you can
simply take a cloth that is smooth-textured, lint-free material and wipe the disc down. For example cotton is usually used compared to facial tissue or paper towels that should be avoided. Lens cleaner with a soft cloth is also recommended. Keep in mind the disc must be completely dry before inserting it back into the disc drive.
Check for scratches
Next, check if there are any scratches on the disc. This can result on the disc becoming unreadable and a new disc may be needed.
If there are no scratches try cleaning the back of the disc carefully before placing in disc drive.
Replace disc drive
If problem persists, repair or replacement will be required for the disc drive. Refer to the guide here for more information on replacing disc drive: Optical Disc Drive Removal/Replacement
Trackpad not functioning at all
If the trackpad is not responding or is sporadically responding.
If the trackpad is not working make sure it is enabled on the device and make sure no external mice are connected. If it continues to not respond follow these steps. Turn the Computer off. Remove all attachments and the battery. Press and Hold the power button for 15 seconds. Replace all attachments including battery. Turn Computer on and press F2 at the Toshiba Splash Screen. Press F9 to reset settings to default. Press F10 to save changes and exit. Press yes to complete.
