Pen Misses Strokes When Taking Notes
Quite a few strokes might be missed when writing in OneNote, Journal, and other apps or functions
Stylus Batteries are Dead
The Stylus is powered by a AAAA battery that can be reached by untwisting the pen just as you would with a regular pen to change the refill. Watch out for the small spring as you take apart the pen. Then change the batteries, put the spring back in, and carefully screw the pen back together.
Bluetooth Batteries are Dead
The button on the top, which is Bluetooth, is powered from two button cell batteries, SR527SW, that you can get to by using a crosshead screwdriver in the cross on the opposite end of the pen top to the button. Again, replace them carefully as done above, and test the pen.
Power Button, Volume Rocker, and Brightness Keys Do Not Respond to First Touch
The power button almost never responds to the first click. To turn on the device multiple presses are needed to reboot the machine. Volume rocker and brightness keys do not respond until the second click.
Misuse of Function (fn) Button
One must press the Function button as well as f11 or f12 simultaneously. This activates the default functions; such as, increasing or decreasing the brightness of the display, the sound volume, sleep, keyboard lock, etc.
How To Bypass the Function Key
Must Disable in the BiOS:
- Press the power button to turn on the computer.
- Press the f10 key to open the BiOS setup window. (On newer computers, you need to hold down the "esc" key. Then you can opt to go into the BiOS settings.)
- Use the right-arrow or left-arrow keys to navigate to the System Configuration option.
- Use the up-arrow or down-arrow keys to navigate to the Action Keys Mode option, and then press the "enter" key to display the Enable / Disable menu.
- Select the desired mode:
- Disabled: You still have the ability to use all those neat shortcut features like ejecting discs, toggling the WiFi and so on with the f1 through f12 keys. Now, in order to use them, you need to hold down the "fn" button to activate the shortcut feature. For example, if Disabled , pressing fn + f11 will mute the sound as indicated on the key on this model PC. Alternatively, pressing f11 only will minimize and maximize a web browser if open. (The action keys may vary depending on the model of notebook.)
- Enabled : Requires pressing only f1 through f12 to use the action as indicated on the action keys.
Press the f10 key to save and then restart the computer.
Touchpad Stalls or Stops Working
At random times, the cursor will pause for a few seconds in the middle of a movement. Sometimes the cursor will completely disappear and restarting the computer is the only way to get it back.
Faulty Software
Change the software to either:
- Update the computer software by downloading the HP Notebook BiOS Update.
- Return the computer to a software configuration when the TouchPad was working by restoring the system to a time when the touchpad was working correctly.
Maintain the Latest Drivers For Your TouchPad
To install the latest drivers:
- Go to the HP Drivers and Downloads (https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/) webpage. Enter your computer model number, then click Go.
- Select your computer model from the list of results.
- Select your operating system from the menu, then click Next.
- Scroll down and select Driver - Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices.
- Click Download next to the appropriate TouchPad or ClickPad driver. The file downloads to your Downloads folder
- Open your Downloads folder and double-click to install the latest driver. Follow onscreen instructions to complete the installation.
Loose Touchpad Connections
Sometimes the touchpad will need to be fixed by hand. There are two options:
- Take apart touchpad and ensure everything is connected correctly
- Replace the touchpad
USB Ports Not Working
Users often times experience 2 of the USB ports next to the HDMI and Ethernet ports stop working when attempting to format Windows 10.
Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter
Run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter
- Press Windows and X together on the keyboard, then click search.
- In the searchbar, type “troubleshooting” and select it.
- Click “Hardware and Sound,” then select “Hardware and Devices,” and the troubleshooter will run when “Next” is pressed.
USB Controllers Updates
Update the USB Controller from the Device Manager Menu
- On the control panel, select “Device Manager” and the Device Manager Window will appear.
- Expand the “USB Controllers” selection by clicking on it.
- Right click the listed USB Controllers and select “update”.
Audio Stops Working
The audio ceases to work when the laptop is brought out of sleep mode or turned on completely, even when all latest BiOS, firmware, and audio drivers are installed.
Run a Sound Test
Go into the BiOS and go to audio. Click on Run Sound Test. This might take more than one try.
Reboot the System
This is a common solution that works most of the time.

Very useful guide but also one trick
Update to the latest bios (do them in order) and use the older bios update tools to use the newer ones (replace the bin file)
After doing this the bios has the ability to disable some on board devices cameras, powerboost, touch etc
if you disable them and the problem goes away, renable until you figure out which device it is
For me I kept getting pnp watchdog BSOD, which from this I discovered was touchscreen specific. removing the touch ribbon cable I found it was damaged and easily fixable by flattening, cleaning and installing properly. Isolating that issue without this bios is rather needle in a haystack esc
