Device Will Not Power On
The device does not respond when the power button is pressed.
Power Adaptor Not Working
If the battery is not working, the charger could be at fault. Plug the charger directly into a working outlet with no surge protectors and see is your device is receiving charge. The issue could be with a faulty power adaptor which may need to be replaced. If the power adaptor is working and charging the device, it should light up even while the computer is off.
Battery Is Not Working
If the power adaptor is not at fault, the battery could be the problem. Make sure that the battery is connected to its contact points and that they are not damaged. If everything is connected properly, the issue could be a faulty battery. You can test your battery with this troubleshooting link.
If you feel as if this problem is due to a faulty battery, check out this guide on how to replace your battery.
Touchpad Not Working
Touchpad does not respond when pressed.
Touchpad Service Not Enabled
It is possible that the Touchpad is disabled on your laptop. If so this can be checked by following these directions; go to Settings—Devices—Mouse & Touchpad—Additional Mouse Options—Device Settings (could also be called Hardware tab or Touchpad tab). Once in the device settings for the mouse/touchpad, make sure your Touchpad is enabled.
Update Needed For The Touchpad Driver
A missing or outdated Touchpad driver could be the cause of a non-working Touchpad. The Touchpad driver can be updated one of two ways. It can be done manually by searching for the driver from the manufacturer then downloading and installing the driver onto the computer. It can also be updated automatically with a software called Driver Easy. Downloading Driver Easy will find the correct driver for your device as well as recognizing your operating system to ensure its compatibility. Once you have installed Driver Easy you can run the program and click the SCAN NOW button. Driver Easy will recommend updates for any drivers that need it. In this case the touchpad driver should be presented as a device with an outdated driver and allow you the option to update it.

Device Will Not Connect to the Internet
Device will not go online when a browser is opened.
Device Not in Range of a Wireless Network
Most laptops rely on Wi-Fi to connect to the internet, so if the device is not connecting to the internet, it’s likely you are not within range of a wireless network. To check and see if you are, click on the Wi-Fi button in the bottom right of your screen (it looks like a dot with concentric quarter circles radiating out from the dot). If no networks appear in the pop-up menu, then you are out of range of all wireless networks.
Wireless Connections Not Enabled
If you are within range of a wireless network, for example at home or in an internet café, but your device will not connect to the internet, it’s possible your wireless connections may be turned off. If this is the case, press the Wi-Fi button on the bottom right of your screen. A menu will pull up, and click the button on the bottom left portion of the menu if it says “Off.” If it says “On,” that means your wireless connections are turned on, and something else is wrong with your internet connection.
Screen is Not Working Properly
The screen is unresponsive when the user interacts with the device.
Dimmed Screen
Many users have complained that the device’s screen is occasionally be dimmer than it should be. If this is the case, you should save anything you are currently working on and manually restart the device from the power menu. If this does not work, you can manually increase the screen brightness, by going to Window Control Panel > Power Options > Power Management. From there, select, adjust plan brightness, and use the slider to increase the brightness until it hits the desired brightness. If the screen is completely black, you can also use the Fn key and the F10 key to increase the brightness. If this doesn’t work, try restarting the laptop.
Black Screen
If your laptop screen is black and will not display anything, your laptop may be dead. Try charging the laptop and leaving it alone for a few minutes and then try powering it on again. If that doesn't work, try pressing and holding the power button for 10 seconds, then release and see if the device responds. This will either power off your device or power it back on if it was shut down, or if it was not working properly, it will power the laptop all the way off. If nothing happens after the first press and hold and you’ve waited 30 second, try pressing and holding the power again. Repeat this process a few times if the device fails to respond.
If you feel as if your screen needs to be replaced check out this guide on how to replace your screen.
Slow Response Time
Device takes a longer to load, download, or respond than normal.
Too Many Apps or Desktops Open
You may have too many app or desktops open, which is taking up RAM space on your device. Try closing all apps and desktops you are not currently using. You can also try plugging in your computer to give it a little more power to work with. If neither of those suggestions work, you can try closing all your apps and restarting the device.
Software or Driver Updates Needed
Your device may need a software or driver update, which you can check for by running a Performance Tune Up Check on the HP website by clicking here. You can also go into your settings and check for an update. Clicking the power button in your device menu will also pull up a pop-up menu that displays power options. Next to the shut down and restart choices, if there is a possible update, the device will give you the option to update and shut down or update and restart. Plug the device in and select your preferred option.
