Computer Will Not Power On

The laptop will not respond or show any sign of powering up.

Not Charged

Although the Dell Vostro 1710 has a considerably long battery life, the device does run out of power eventually. Every Dell Vostro 1710 comes with a battery charger that plugs in on the left side of the laptop. Plug in the laptop; the laptop should charge in less than 2 hours according to Dell.

Faulty Battery

Plug your laptop in, using a charger that you know works. If the laptop still does not charge, this is a sign of a faulty battery and the battery needs to be replaced. Replace the battery using this guide.

Faulty AC DC Power Jack

Ensure the power adapter is plugged in and the charge light is on. If the light is not on, and the adapter is plugged in, the adapter may be faulty. Consider purchasing a replacement adapter. If the new adapter does not work, the power jack is faulty.

Faulty Motherboard

The Dell Vostro is a complicated device that contains many components but not all the components would relate to this problem of the device. Through the process of elimination, faulty parts can be narrowed down. If the laptop does not turn on after the previous steps, it is likely the motherboard needs to be replaced.

Keyboard Not Working/Responding

The keys on the keyboard will not respond or appear to be broken, missing or dirty.

Keys missing

If keys on the keyboard are missing, replace them.

Keys stuck in place

When keys can't be pressed, there may be a build-up of dirt or dust. Sometimes, blowing the keyboard at multiple angles with compressed air may fix the problem. if not, remove the key and make sure nothing is stuck below it. You may need to wipe off the area underneath. Once it is sufficiently clean, snap the key back into position.

Faulty keyboard

If the entire keyboard fails to respond, try replacing it using this guide.

Computer Overheating

Computer seems to be hot or message appears on screen stating that it is overheating.

Fan is faulty

Make sure fan is spinning when the computer is turned on, if not, the fan needs to be replaced. Also, dust can build up on the surface of the computer and on the inside. Make sure vents are clean using a cloth and using compressed air to blow into vents to clean the fan and ventilation system. Replace the fan using this guide.

Battery is faulty

The battery will feel warm or hot to the touch, and may not hold a charge well. Ensure the battery is correctly connected to the laptop and that the connectors are clean. The battery should have enough space to be well ventilated. Replace the battery using this guide.

Heatsink is Faulty

The computer will feel warm or hot to the touch on the bottom of the laptop. This is caused by heat not being absorbed or dissipated into the air correctly because your heatsink may be faulty. Replace your heat sink using this guide.

Nothing is Saving

Files appear to be lost or corrupted and unable to retrieve data you have saved.

Hard Drive Faulty

The average lifespan of a hard drive is around 5-10 years, depending on the type and manufacture of the hard drive. If none of your data is saving then you may have a faulty hard drive. Some of the signs that your hard drive is faulty include hearing strange noises like grinding and thrashing, having data disappear or disk errors. Your computer might even stop recognizing your drive, have really slow access or your may Computer crash. Replace the hard drive using this guide.

Not Enough RAM

If your computer crashes during normal operation, crashes during memory intensive tasks, or beeps and will not boot up, this means you have bad RAM or that you do not have enough RAM. Upgrade RAM into your computer. Replace RAM using this guide.

Cannot Connect to Wi-Fi

Unable to access the internet via wifi.

Wifi is Not On

Make Sure the wifi on your device is turned on. The wifi icon is on the taskbar in the bottom right corner. Click on it to access the settings and verify that wifi is turned on. If turning on the wifi doesn't work, try right-clicking on the wifi icon, then left click on Troubleshoot problems.

Wifi Card Faulty

Make certain that you are connected to the right network and that the correct username and password are used. If you still cannot connect to the internet, try If this doesn’t work you can try resetting the wifi router and attempt to connect after thirty seconds. You can replace the wifi card if you cannot connect to the internet wirelessly. Replace the mini-PCI Express card using this guide.
