AC Adapter
Make sure your charging cable is properly plugged in and isn’t cut or frayed. Once you see the Dell logo, press F2 until the setup page appears.
Battery
If the computer is old, it may be time to replace the original battery. On this laptop, it is very straight forward. To do this, push the button on the bottom of the laptop and it will pop out. HDMI and USB ports not recognizing devices
Computer will not respond to outside devices being plugged in via HDMI or USB port.
USB Cable
Check to see if the cable you are using has any cuts in the wire that may be preventing a good connection. Plug in to another device in order to check functionality. Also try another port on the laptop to figure the source of the problem.
USB Port
if the cord seems to be in working order, it may be a bad USB port on the laptop. Try another port and see if the problem resolves itself.
System Update
Try checking the system settings to see if there is an update available tat might affect the response of the ports. If there is no such update, contact Dell for support regarding failed ports.

Restart your computer. When it is done restarting, plug the cable back into the HDMI or USB port and check if the laptop recognizes the device. If not, move on to examining the port. Inspect it for debris, dust, or food. If anything is inside, shut down the computer and carefully remove the obstruction with a small instrument like a toothpick. If nothing is found in the port, the internal connection may be broken or loose. Test this by inserting the USB or HDMI connected device and move it around slightly. If the laptop connects to the device and then disconnects, or briefly recognizes it, the port or cable may be broken. If more movement is possible when testing the internal connection, the port may be detached or bent from its place in the laptop. In this case, it is best to take your laptop in to a professional.
If the above solutions did not work, try using any other HDMI or USB ports. Unplug from the port you are having issues with and test out others on the laptop. If the device starts working, the first port will need to be fixed for future use. Make sure to try out different cables with your computer. The cable may be broken rather than the port,
The cable-connected device could also be the problem rather than your laptop, Plug it into another computer and test if the device is recognized. If the USB device comes alive when plugged into a new computer, it is for sure the port that is the issue. Plugging a different USB device into your computer will also determine if it is the port or the device that is the problem.
Updating the system on your laptop may resolve the HDMI or USB port connectivity issue. For this Windows computer, first right click Start then left click Run. Next, type devmgmt.msc and click OK. This will open Device Manager Locate Universal Serial Bus Controllers in the list. Click the arrow next to the small cable so that it points down instead of to the right. Right click on the first USB or HDMI controller in the list, then left click on update driver option. Select search automatically for updated driver software. For each controller in the list, redo this process starting with right clicking on the list’s first USB or HDMI controller. After repeating these steps, restart your computer and check to see if your cable-connected device works.
