If the Alienware AW510H's built-in microphone is not being detected or producing no audio, follow this page for possible solutions.
Microphone Muted via Boom Position
The boom mic may auto-mute when retracted. Extend it fully downward and retest.
Microphone Muted via Inline Button
Press the inline mute button on the cable to unmute. A click or LED indicates the current state.
Headphone Jack Not Properly Connected
Unplug and re-plug the headphone jack cable into a rear motherboard port. Avoid front-panel ports and unpowered hubs.
Headset Not Set as Default Recording Device
Right-click the speaker icon → Sound settings → More sound settings → Recording tab. Right-click the AW510H microphone and set it as both the Default Device and Default Communication Device.
Microphone Access Blocked by Windows Privacy Settings
Go to Settings → Privacy → Microphone and confirm microphone access is On for the system and for your apps.
Microphone Volume Set to Zero or Muted in Windows
In Sound settings → Recording tab, double-click the AW510H mic → Levels tab. Set volume to at least 80 and confirm it isn't muted.
Incorrect Input Device Selected in App
In your app's audio settings (Discord, game, etc.), set the input device to the AW510H explicitly rather than Default.
Outdated or Corrupted Audio Driver
Open Device Manager → Audio inputs and outputs. Right-click the AW510H mic and choose Update driver. If that fails, Uninstall device, then unplug and replug the headset to reinstall fresh.
Microphone Boost Too High
In Sound settings → Recording → AW510H Properties → Levels, reduce Microphone Boost to 0 dB.
USB Port Interference
Move the headset to a direct motherboard USB port on the rear of the PC to avoid power noise from hubs or front-panel ports.
Outdated Firmware
Install the latest Alienware Command Center (AWCC) from Dell's support site and apply any available headset firmware updates.
Damaged Boom Cable
Flex the boom arm while speaking. If audio cuts out as you move it, the internal wire is broken and the headset needs repair or replacement.
Loose or Damaged USB Connector
Wiggle the cable at the USB plug while monitoring audio. If it cuts out, the connector is faulty. Replace the cable if detachable; otherwise replace the headset.
USB Power Management Disconnecting Device
In Device Manager → Universal Serial Bus controllers, open each USB Root Hub's Properties → Power Management tab and uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
Driver Conflict or Corrupted Installation
In Device Manager, uninstall the AW510H mic driver (check the box to delete driver software), then unplug and re-plug the headset to reinstall automatically.
Conflicting Audio Software
Disable or uninstall third-party audio apps (equalizers, virtual cables, Dolby Atmos, etc.) one at a time and retest to find the conflict.
Faulty Microphone Element
The microphone element in the boom has failed. The AW510H mic is not sold separately — contact Dell/Alienware support for a warranty replacement if eligible.
If none of the above work and the problem still persists, please check the Alienware AW510H guide HERE.
