Controller Has Low Functionality
The controller responds poorly or not at all.
Distance From Robots
At large distances the controller will have a diminished impact on the robots. Move closer to the smash bots and try again. You should probably be within 3 feet.
Battery Issues
Each controller requires two AAA batteries and each bot requires three AAA batteries for a total of 10 AAA batteries. The smash bots use batteries quickly and a rechargeable battery station might be a useful purchase. Make sure batteries are near full charge for the best results. Make sure batteries are oriented in the correct direction. Look at our Air Hog Smash Bots Front Panel Replacement guide to see how to remove and replace the batteries.
Channel Select Issues
The controller has three settings: OFF, A, and B. When not in use it is a good idea to use the off setting to save battery life. When in use make sure the controllers are on different channels; one on A and one on B. Make sure the robots are also set to the corresponding channels.
Interference
With short length radio signals, interference from other devices can occur. If the smash bots are reacting to commands sporadically, interference is a likely cause. Make sure that no high power electronic devices like HAM radios are transmitting near the smash bots.
Internal Malfunctions
The main board for the controller may be broken and needs replaced. For steps on how to access and replace the main board go to our Air Hog Smash Bots Front Panel Replacement guide.
Robot Does Not Respond to Commands
The robot responds poorly or not at all.
Low Batteries
Each Smash bot requires three AAA batteries. Make sure batteries are near full charge for the best results. Make sure batteries are oriented in the correct direction. Diminished performance is a symptom of low batteries. Replace the batteries and try again.

Internal Malfunctions
There might be an internal malfunction that isn't allowing the smash bot to work. The motherboard or radio receiver might need replaced. To replace the motherboard go to the Motherboard Replacement Guide, and go to the Radio Receiver Replacement Guide to replace the radio receiver.
Sticky or Missing Keys on the Controllers
The keys on the controllers will not respond or aren't there.
Keys Are Missing
If the keys are missing on the controllers, purchase new ones and replace them.
Keys Can't Be Pressed
When there is something under the keys holding up the keys, the keys cannot be pressed. To fix it, remove the keys and clean the area underneath. Then snap the keys back into the initial positions and try again. For help on opening the controller, go to the Front Panel Replacement Guide.
Robot Does Not Move Forward
When commanded to move forward, the robot malfunctions.
Distance From Controller
At large distances the controller may lose control on the robots. Move the controller closer to the smash bots and try again. You should probably be within 3 feet.
Surface is Uneven
An uneven surface could make smash bots hard to move forward. Move to an even surface and try again.
Batteries are Low
Low batteries will diminish smash bot performance. Change the batteries and try again. Consider purchasing a rechargeable battery station and ten AAA rechargeable batteries.
Internal problems
Internal problems can lead to malfunctions. You might need to replace parts. Consider checking the radio receiver internal motor and the motherboard.
Robot Does Not Correctly Spin
When commanded to spin, the robot does not follow the command and malfunctions
Distance From Controller
At large distances the controller may lose control on the robots. Move the controller closer to the smash bots and try again. You should probably be within 3 feet.
Surface is Tilted
An uneven surface could cause smash bots to topple while spinning. Move to an even surface and try again.
Batteries are Low
Low batteries will diminish smash bot performance. Change the batteries and try again. Consider purchasing a rechargeable battery station and ten AAA rechargeable batteries.
Internal problems
Several internal problems can lead to malfunctions. You might need to replace a malfunctioning part. Consider checking the motor and the motherboard.
