You’re right there. This is a software issue. There are other reports of this happening with version 6.7.8. Apple recommends a reset. There is no software upgrades available, and who knows if Apple will do this in the future to their later models.

What phone do you have? I do know that there are some models by LG where it is impossible to even reset it. By the way, if you enabled USB debugging before you locked your device, there are some PC tools that can help you.
The problems could be large. There would be nothing holding the home button in place. Also, there could be permanent damage to the home button, connector, or your display. If the button breaks, you will never get Touch ID again. You should get a new cover. You can find them all over the internet.
What type of J2 is it? There is the Core, Prime, Pro, and etc. models. You can find them on sites like eBay, Amazon, etc. However, be careful! Certain sellers may try to sell you a fake or low quality display.
