Hi! I am a freshman at the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth. I am majoring in biomedical engineering on the premed track with a minor in biochemistry.
Ever since I was a little kid, I knew I wanted to go into a science related field. During my sophomore year of high school, I joined science research. In this class, I was able to research a variety of topics. Oncology spiked my interest. I read a large amount of journal articles about biology, cancer, cells, etc. I was able to find a mentor who opened possibilities for me. By partaking in the FDA Oncology Center of Excellence Summer Scholars Program, I was able to learn about all different professions and connect with professionals in the field. Then enabled me to connect with other members of the FDA. I was able work along side a team of FDA members in which I completed a project and I had the honor to be able to present the research at a high school competition.
During my senior year of high school, I was in an elite program: New Visions Health Careers Exploration Program. During this program, I was able to get 500 clinical hours shadowing different medical professions and getting real life experience. My favorite department in the hospital was pathology. I was able to touch an above the knee leg amputation that was calcified and had gangrene, in which a mechanical saw was used to obtain tissue. The connects I made and the knowledge I gained solidified my interests.
I am new to iFixit but I hope my teams' guides can be impactful for those who need it!
