Hello! Welcome to my little profile.

Who I am

I'm Amaury Leonel from Merida, Mexico. I like to disassemble things and try to understand how they work. Some day I hope to study mechatronics.

How did I start repairing

I guess it started with my dad, he is the person that got me into electronics. When I was little I always saw him do interesting stuff with broken household electronics, he made drills with broken fans, also extracted the exhaust fan from microwaves to make desk fans if he didn’t manage to fix them.

I started doing the same stuff has him, I wasn’t the greatest at it (and i’m definitely not the greatest even today) but I managed to fix some stuff here and there. Then my old Sony Xperia broke, at the time I didn’t know anything about how the internals of a smartphone work, I only knew that the screen was broken, I didn’t even have the tools to open it, so I got to the nearest tool store and bought the cheapest tools I could find to open my phone.

It was hard at first, since the Xperia I had was water resistant the glue used to hold the back panel was strong, when I managed to get it open I started to unscrew all the little screws I could find, in the process some of the screws were lost but in the end, my phone came back to life! I still have it somewhere in storage alive and well, though it’s too old to be used in 2022.

That little repair it’s what lit a little light bulb in my head, I liked to repair electronics and see how they work, since then I have just been repairing the broken things in my house and try to understand how they work, from my air conditioner and fridge, to some old watches and iPods.

Some more of the things I've fixed

Obviously not all the repairs I’ve done where successful, one failed repair is a Sony Handycam model DCR-TRV17, it has a broken Mini DV player, broken view finder and the worst of all, a broken camera module. So I can’t even used it with a memory stick. The parts that I need are rare, really rare.

Right now I’m working on two broken iPod nanos 4th generation, one has a broken logic board while the other one has a broken click wheel and hold switch. An old Casio watch model W800H, it has problems with some connections for the battery and screen. Also the most difficult one at the moment an iPad mini 2 with a broken digitizer connector, because of this iPad I’ve been trying to improve my micro-soldering equipment and skills, but here in Mexico the tools I need are expensive if you want something decent

More of my interests

But enough talking about repairs, I’ll share some of my other interests, I like collecting old coins that I find or coins from other countries, I’m not that invested into them but I definitely like them. Another thing I’m interested in are iPods, of all kinds, from the shuffles to classics, I still use the iPod nano 7th gen as my daily driver, it has all the features I need while also being incredibly small so I can take it anywhere.

One thing I absolutely love are my Nintendo consoles, and I’m proud to say that I’m one of the remaining Wii U owners out there, and I’ve recently got my hands on a Gamecube but I haven’t found any games locally so I will have to order them online. I also have a launch Switch that I’ve replaced the original grey casing for an Animal Crossing one, it not the real thing but I say it’s really close.

Another thing that I enjoy is building more things with random pieces I have laying around, but im exceptionally proud of one of them, a little 10cm x 10cm bluetooth speaker made out of cardboard (It's not that pretty) , and from salvaged electronics my dad found. The battery life on the thing is amazing, it has 7 18650 batteries (new ones, not reused) , so with a full charge it can last a week of music playback through Bluetooth.

And that is who I am, that’s what you need to know about me. Thanks for reading.
