Use this guide to replace the control touch panel on a KitchenAid dishwasher. The control touch panel, also called the keypad or touchpad, is the user interface in the door that sends button presses to the main control board. Replace it if Control Lock won't clear, some keys never respond, or the panel only works intermittently. This guide was written for KitchenAid model KDTE254ESS1. Similar Whirlpool and Maytag models may use a different part number or key layout, so confirm the correct replacement before ordering.

-
手順1 Confirm the fault and disconnect power
-
Keep the door fully assembled while you confirm the button symptoms.
-
Suspect a faulty touch panel if Control Lock won't clear after you hold the key for three seconds.
-
Suspect the panel if keys respond only sometimes, take a long time to react, or work again only after the dishwasher has been powered off for hours.
-
Turn the breaker off or unplug the dishwasher before removing any screws.
-
-
手順2 Support the door and remove the door screws
-
Place a stool under the open door so the door can rest on it.
-
Use a driver to remove the 10 inner door screws.
-
The two center screws are longer, and the four screws on each side are shorter.
-
-
手順3 Separate the front panel
-
Lift the outer front panel slightly to release the plastic retainers on both sides.
-
Pull the panel forward just far enough to reach the touch-panel cable.
-
Press the connector latch and unplug the cable.
-
Lift the front panel away from the dishwasher.
-
Set the panel on a stable work surface.
-
-
手順4 Test the main control board
-
Leave the touch-panel cable unplugged and keep the dishwasher door open.
-
Restore power for this test only.
-
Wait about 10 seconds, then close the door fully.
-
Listen for the drain pump to start.
-
If the drain pump starts, the main control board is probably good and the touch panel is the more likely failed part.
-
-
手順5 Remove the touch panel screws
-
Flip the front panel over on the work surface.
-
Locate the three screws that secure the control touch panel.
-
Use a driver to remove the three touch-panel screws.
-
-
手順6 Remove the old touch panel
-
Lift the old touch panel out of the front panel.
-
Use a small screwdriver to free any tight tabs or edges.
-
Mark the old panel if it looks similar to the replacement.
-
-
手順7 Test the replacement touch panel
-
Keep the door open and bring both touch panels to the dishwasher.
-
Plug in the old touch panel, restore power, and test the problem keys if you want a baseline.
-
Plug in the replacement touch panel, restore power, and press every key.
-
-
手順8 Install the replacement touch panel
-
Place the front panel on the work surface with the inside facing up.
-
Slide the replacement touch panel into the front panel.
-
Start one side under the retaining edge, especially near the tight screw that may not come out fully.
-
Use a small screwdriver to work the opposite side under the retaining edge.
-
If the lower edge doesn't seat at first, get the panel mostly in place and work it outward until it sits correctly.
-
Slide the full panel into its final position once the edges are seated.
-
-
手順9 Reinstall the touch panel screws
-
Use a driver at low torque to install the three shortest screws in the control touch panel.
-
Install the screws in the same three positions they came from.
-
Snug the screws without overtightening them.
-
-
手順10 Reconnect the cable and hang the panel
-
Find the metal lip on the front panel and the matching channel on the door.
-
The lip must slide into the channel, so seat the panel from the top.
-
Hold the front panel against the door and slide it down from the top until it seats.
-
-
手順11 Reinstall the door screws
-
Use a driver to reinstall the 10 inner door screws.
-
Install the two long screws in the center positions.
-
Install the eight short screws along the sides, four on each side.
-
Snug all 10 screws evenly.
-
Stop once the screws are tight and secure.
-
-
手順12 Test the dishwasher controls
-
Restore power and wait 5 to 10 seconds for the controls to wake up.
-
Press each key to confirm it responds consistently.
-
Hold Control Lock for three seconds to make sure it can turn on and off.
-
Start a cycle briefly to confirm the Start key works.
-
Use Cancel to stop the cycle.
-
If Control Lock stays on or keys still don't respond, turn the power off and reseat the touch-panel cable.
-
Confirm the replacement part number matches the dishwasher model if the problem remains.
-
Run a short test cycle and confirm the buttons respond, the dishwasher starts, and Cancel stops the cycle. Repair didn't go as planned? Ask our Answers community for help.
