How to Wash and Dry a Waterproof Jacket

Washing your waterproof jacket is one of the best ways to increase its performance and longevity. There are no set rules as to when you should wash your jacket, but there are a few signs that the time has come: wetting out (no longer water repellent), stained cuffs or collar, or downright dirtiness! Washing your jacket is simple and will help your jacket to keep all your stories and secrets for another time.

    • Brush off any loose dirt or debris.

    • Particularly dirty spots should be pretreated. Make a soapy mixture with water and the detergent you intend to use and scrub the soiled area with a soft brush or sponge.

    • Water-based (not oil-based), biodegradable liquid detergent free of dye, whiteners, brighteners, or fragrance. Many of these detergents are marketed as " for sensitive skin"

    • More than one technical garment can be washed at once, but do not exceed more than half of the size of the washing machine drum

    • Only use the bare minimum amount of detergent needed. Excess detergent clogs the pores of the waterproof membrane and interferes with DWR function

    • Set the load size according to the relative number of garments

    • Set the water temperature to Warm or Cold

    • Run the washer on a regular or permanent press cycle setting

    • If possible, set an extra rinse cycle

    • Run a separate rinse cycle if the machine did not have the option in the last step

    • Take the garment out of the washing machine

    • This tumble dry step is crucial as the heat resets he DWR coating that allows water to bead off the surface of the fabric

    • Set the dryer to at least 20 minutes of Tumble Dry low.

    • A garment that goes in soaking wet may take more than 20 minutes to dry

    • The heat of the dryer is crucial to resetting the DWR coating
