Background and Identification
The Toyota Tundra is a pickup truck manufactured in the United States by Toyota, a Japanese automaker, since May 1999. The Tundra was the first North American full-size pickup to be built by a Japanese manufacturer and is the only full-size pickup truck manufactured in Texas.
The Toyota Tundra is available in either a two-door regular cab or four-door double cab and Crewmax body styles. They are sold with a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel drive layout. The first-generation Tundra (2000-2006) had many similarities to the Toyota Tacoma and the older Toyota T100 trucks. The Double Cab models have a towing capacity of 6,900 pounds while the Access Cab and Regular Cab models feature a towing capacity of 7,100 pounds thanks to its V8 engine. The second-generation Tundra trucks (2007-present) are larger than the first-generation trucks but still include similar styling to the Toyota Tacoma and the Toyota FTX concept truck. These trucks feature a towing capacity of up to 10,000 pounds and a payload capacity of over 2,000 pounds.
The Tundra was Motor Trend magazine’s Truck of the Year in 2000 and 2008 and was nominated for the North American Truck of the Year award in the same years. Consumer Reports rated the 2013 Tundra 2WD pickup as having the highest predicted reliability among all full-size pickup trucks, while the Tundra 4x4 model was rated second to the 2WD model for reliability. According to Consumer Reports, the Toyota Tundra is the only full-size truck to have an above-average reliability rating, despite a list of recalls throughout its production (Wikipedia Toyota Tundra Recalls).
Toyota vehicles in the Americas can be identified by the Toyota emblem, which depicts three overlapping ellipses.
