Background

Rice cookers, also known as rice steamers (and suihanki in Japanese), are automated kitchen appliances that steam or boil rice. Prior to the invention of automated rice cookers, rice was generally made by adding rice to a pot of boiling water from half an hour to upwards of an hour. Depending on the quantity of rice, an electronic rice cooker can make rice from 20 minutes to an hour. 
Rice cookers come in all shapes and sizes. Standard rice cookers used at home can cook anywhere from 1-4 cups of rice. Commercial rice cookers (like the ones used in restaurants) can make up to 20 cups of rice. Generally, the commercial rice cookers use gas as the energy source. The more advanced rice cookers can be found in your own home. Led by brands like Zojirushi and Tiger, induction heating rice cookers are the most advanced rice cookers to date. These kinds of rice cookers usually have multiple cooking settings and can perform other cooking tasks as well.
