Memory card storage is measured in blocks. In first-party cards, one block is equivalent to about 8 kilobytes, although today's aftermarket cards' block size is closer to 16 kilobytes. First-party memory cards came in three colors. Gray memory cards, probably the most common first-party card, held 59 memory blocks, or 512 kilobytes. Black memory cards, or 251s, were so called because they held 251 blocks, or about 2 megabytes. White memory cards held a staggering 1019 memory blocks, or 8 megabytes. More recent third-party cards may hold even more. The Nintendo GameCube was Nintendo's first and only console to primarily use memory cards for its game saves. The N64 controller had an accessory for data transfer and storage, but most games didn't use it as their primary medium of storage. The original Wii was backwards compatible with nearly all GameCube hardware and software, including the memory cards, its primary storage medium was its built-in memory, supplemented by a replaceable SD card.
