Background
Monarch Tractor is a California agricultural technology company that makes electric, driver-optional tractors and off-highway autonomy software. The company launched its first commercial vehicle, the MK-V Tractor, as a battery-electric compact tractor for vineyards, orchards, dairy farms, municipalities, solar sites, and other off-highway operations.
Monarch says its headquarters are in Livermore, California. Its December 1, 2022 production announcement says the Founder Series MK-V began coming off the production line in Livermore, with Constellation Brands receiving the first six tractors. In August 2025, Monarch announced MonarchOne, the autonomy and data platform used by the MK-V and intended for off-highway equipment manufacturers.
In 2025 and 2026, Monarch shifted away from tractor manufacturing after a series of business setbacks. TechCrunch reported that Foxconn stopped building Monarch tractors after selling its Lordstown, Ohio factory in August 2025, that Monarch faced dealer lawsuits over MK-V autonomy claims, and that a January 2026 court filing said Monarch had entered an assignment for the benefit of creditors. SFGATE reported in April 2026 that Monarch had laid off nearly all employees and left its Livermore headquarters.
In April 2026, Monarch announced that its core technology, including its software-defined vehicle platform, perception stack, and electrification systems, had been acquired by an unnamed large global equipment manufacturer. Bloomberg first identified the buyer as Caterpillar; TechCrunch and Equipment World reported that United States Patent and Trademark Office assignment filings showed Monarch intellectual property moving to Caterpillar. At the time of those reports, neither Monarch nor Caterpillar had publicly announced the buyer by name.
Monarch's support materials include knowledge base articles for charging, brakes, lubrication, jacking, transport, radiator cleaning, hydraulic service, and scheduled maintenance.
Identification
Monarch Tractor pages and documents use "Monarch Tractor" for the company and "MK-V" for the tractor model. Identify Monarch tractors by the Monarch branding, battery-electric drivetrain, roof-mounted camera system, four-post rollover protection structure, J1772 charging port, and MK-V model name.
