Background and Identification
Electroconvulsive therapy is a psychiatric medical procedure in which a patient receives electrical stimulation to the brain to treat mental health disorders, including major depressive disorder (MDD), catatonia, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. In electroconvulsive therapy, the electrical stimulation to the patient’s brain produces a brief seizure, while the patient is under general anesthesia.
