Background and Identification
Bissell Inc., also known as Bissell Homecare, is an American vacuum cleaner and floor care product manufacturing corporation. Bissell is the number one manufacturer of floor care products in North America by sales and claims 20-percent of the floor care product market.
Melville Bissell developed a carpet sweeping machine that was patented in 1876 as the Bissell Carpet Sweeper. Bissell began selling his carpet sweepers in 1883. When Melville passed away in 1889, his wife Anna stepped in to run the Bissell company, making her the first female CEO in America. By the 1890s, Bissells’ first manufacturing plant was producing over one thousand sweepers each day. Beginning in the 20th century, new powered versions of the carpet sweeper were designed with rechargeable batteries and an electric motor to spin the rollers and brushes.
In 2004, Bissell acquired a license for the Woolite trademark for all carpet and upholstery cleaning formulas. Bissell has also moved into the pet-care industry and manufactures attachments and solutions specifically designed for cleaning up pet hair and stains. In 2009, Bissell overtook Hoover and became the number one floor-care product seller in North America.
Bissell products can be identified by the Bissell emblem, which includes the name “Bissell” in black font in the center of a red triangle.
