Background and Identification
The Lexus RX is a mid-size luxury crossover five-door SUV (sport utility vehicle) sold by Lexus, Toyota’s luxury division, beginning in 1998. The name “RX” stands for “Radiant Crossover” and has also been labeled as “Recreational Cross Country” in several markets. The Lexus RX was originally released in Japan in 1997 as the Toyota Harrier, but export sales began in March 1999 as the Lexus RX. The RX was classified as a compact luxury crossover SUV between 1998 and 2003, and as a mid-size luxury crossover SUV after 2003. The Lexus RX has been produced through four generations.
The third-generation Lexus RX was released in November 2008 for the 2010 model year. Production for this generation ended in 2015. The RX was built on the Toyota K platform and was sold with either a 2.7-liter or 3.5-liter gasoline engine, or a 3.5-liter gasoline hybrid engine. Vehicles were available with either a six-speed automatic transmission, an eight-speed automatic transmission, or a continuously variable transmission (CVT).
The Lexus RX has been the best-selling luxury SUV since its introduction. It was one of the earliest luxury crossovers on the market and is the top-selling Lexus hybrid. Lexus vehicles can be identified by the Lexus emblem, which includes a letter ‘L’ inside of an oval.
