My son dropped our 12" iBook G4 from chair level and broke the case around the display. The hinge still works, but the case is delaminated. I have an older G3 iBook and was wondering if the case parts from that can be substituted with the broken G4 parts?

Yes the iBook G3/G4 displays are similar but they don't use the same cables. The display casing color will not match and the the word G4 will not appear on the the front bezel.
Could you specify the display damage or upload a pict in your question. Often after a drop the panel will separate from the front bezel at the screen base. If the hinges (or other internal parts) are not broken you can open the display and check if the inverter board has moved from his location (it's only glued in place) causing the front gap.
