Why do small plastic balls fall off the bottom of my laptop?

I have these little white balls that are coming off from micro cracks in the outer finish of my laptop - but why is it happening? Does anyone else have this problem? I've tried to seal the bottom with a safe sealant, but that wears off. And just some packing tape that I can remove has slowed the shedding down - but it always finds a way to continue. No other iBook we've had has done this.

Any suggestions?

Does it get hot when running from battery power? Try it on battery power for thirty minutes then plug it in and see if there is a difference in temperature in 15 minutes.

Well, this has been going on for over 6 months and no shocks so far. I've uploaded a quick snap of it - low res and looks a bit fuzzy - sorry, it's late and I'm tired! - but I think you get the idea of what they are. The photo is the corner of my little laptop desk, and this is the only place where they fall off of the bottom of the computer. I'll do a heat test when using the battery - I don't think that's been a problem - I haven't notice it anyway - but my battery has been so bad that I most often run off the adapter. Thanks again.

Mayer - I ran it on the battery for thirty minutes and it got a little warm - nothing out of the ordinary. When I plugged it in, it got a little warmer but again, not super hot or anything - just normal heat as it always puts off. Currently, on the adapter and with the battery charging, the laptop isn't over hot and the little balls are not appearing on my little laptop desk - at the moment. So, it's weird, but it doesn't seem to be affecting the functioning of my computer. I've removed all the tape I put on the bottom to prevent the little bits from falling off, since it didn't seem to help that much.

I downloaded the temp monitor: results with the power adapter: Battery: 27C, Graphis Pros Bottomside: 53C, Power Supply/Memory Bottomside: 48.8C, Processor Bottomside: 50.2C, Smart Disk Fujitsu MHV2060ATP: 47C; same overview on battery: 30C, 49.8C, 44.2C, 48.2C, 42C - so, they numbers are well below the specifie upper limits for the first, third, and fourth readings of 73C, 63C, 83C- the other two didn't have upper limit numbers. its silica gel. used for removing humidity. Usually comes in a small paper bag. it might have teared open. Link for more details: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silica_gel

does it affect my performance if it was teared open and all the silica gel fell out? is it dangerous? the same thing happened to me

i do have a pack of silica gel after tore down my Ibook g4, is it come from inside the ibook? Thanks

On the bottom case ? If so buy a used bottom case for $15 and replace the damaged one.

Mayer - Thanks for your answer. The balls are hard, only about 2mm in size. I can't imagine it is old packaging. It only falls off from the upper right hand side. It seems like small bits of plastic are peeling off and because they are hot, they roll up into a ball. I've had this laptop for 3 years and this started a few months ago. There are little cracks in the bottom finish of the laptop and I assumed they were just coming from there - but I really don't know.

lemerise - Thanks for your answer. I don't know if I used the correct word when I said "case" - it is just the bottom of my laptop, on the side opposite from where the battery is - so the "left" side as I look at the screen.

This is a necro by a long shot, but I'm afraid my macbook pro late 2011 is having the same problem. For several years I have been baffled by these small balls coming out of nowhere, but now everything makes sense that I know it's from my computer. I have no idea how to fix this and I have never seen these balls before inside my computer, even though it is obvious to me now, that they are coming from there.

I have an Asus laptop about three years old and have been finding these balls on the floor for a year or two but can't find any crack in the bottom of laptop and have never found one on my desk, I was thinking maybe they are falling out from the bottom of my swivel desk chair or the carrying case for my laptop. I'm still baffled because I can't duplicate it. If anyone knows for sure would you please email me at mjneiner@aol.com Thanks

Okay, so I got a new Lenovo Yoga X1 and was surprised to find these small balls appearing out of my laptop all the time. Turns out, there was a silica gel sachet in my laptop bag and it tore because of the laptop weight. Funny, isn't it?

I have a chromebook that I use for school and it came from the school. I've been finding these silicone balls on my chromebook, usually on the keyboard. I don't know where from my chromebook they could be coming from, but these other responses helped me out as to why they keep appearing.
