Repair shop asking for apple id

My MacBook air recently stopped turning on and since it's way past warranty I Decided to get it serviced at a unauthorized repair shop. They told me it's a motherboard failure and told me that to diagnose the motherboard they need my apple ID and Password? Should I give it to them? They said that their diagnostic machine requires it.

Hoping to see some answers soon

I am not aware of any diagnostic test that requires your apple ID and password. Definitely nothing official apple, and nothing I have ever seen from unofficial channels either. I'm not sure what they're getting at. Your Apple ID might be necessary for records or something. But there is no reason any technician should ever ask for this password as far as I'm concerned.

Even when I was an authorized tech and we needed to turn off find my device from any device before repair. I had the client do it all themselves. At most I would ask to find it in settings, toggle switch off and give it back to the owner to enter credentials I don't ever want that information to be honest. I didn't even want PINs most of the time when I did repairs because I didn't need access to any of that for Apple's diagnostics.

If the logic board failed there is really no way to access the system directly via your user ID and Password. This sounds very fishy!

If the system is working one can run the onboard Diagnostics following this Use Apple Diagnostics to test your Mac then taking the error code against this listApple Diagnostics reference codes

Bottom line: Don’t hand your information to anyone just because they ask.

If it's a motherboard failure, then the issue is unrelated to your Apple account and I don't see a reason why the technician would need your Apple ID password. I can't find any official Apple source saying this is necessary, even for official Apple technicians. In the future, it would be a good idea to do a backup of the device and then reset the device to factory default settings before sending it in for repair.
