Display Issues on MacBook Pro M1 Pro 16-Inch After Screen Replacement

Block Image

I recently encountered display issues with my MacBook Pro (M1 Pro 16-inch model)

My MacBook’s screen was damaged, so I initially replaced it with a third-party LCD panel. After the replacement, I noticed some issues like Dimming of the display and white patches or flickering animations that appear briefly and then auto-resolve.

I decided to switch to an Apple Original display, hoping to fix the issue. Unfortunately, the problem still persists

Ouch! That’s not good. Sounds like your logic board also was affected in the mishap.

While extreme, make a full backup of your system and then see if wiping the drive down fully and doing a full OS install resolves the issue. The thinking here is corruption within the systems RAM or flash storage. The system uses both for caching the screens display so an error in the data could be the issue, rebuilding should solve that. But it still might be a deeper issue.

Thank you for the suggestion!

Just to clarify, I’ve already tried the following steps:

1. Backed Up the System: I created a full backup of my system to ensure all my data is safe.

2. Wiped the Drive and Reinstalled macOS: I erased the drive entirely and performed a fresh installation of macOS. Unfortunately, the display issues still persist.

Could this issue be related to calibration between the display and the logic board? I’ve read that sometimes after a screen replacement, especially with original displays, calibration may be necessary to ensure proper functionality.

@ayushmishr27428 - Sorry it's not calibration, You have a regular Liquid Retina display in your 2021, if you had a Liquid Retina XDR display which was offered in the 2023 system then I could see this as a calibration issue.

If you got the display directly from Apple you would have access to the Calibration tool which is behind a paywall without the info from Apples paperwork you can't access it. If you do have access to the calibration tool you should have run it as its needed for the camera and TrueTone to work correctly.

Here we have a fade around the FaceTime camera slot, thats a LCD display issue, not the backlight its self.

I checked my MacBook Pro model on the official Apple website, and it confirms that my screen is indeed a Liquid Retina XDR display (you can verify this here: https://support.apple.com/en-in/111901 ). The display was working perfectly before it got cracked. I also found the same screen glitch issue reported with the same model (A2485) on this website: (https://tinyurl.com/y7r83xnd ) where they mention it could be a calibration issue.

The replacement screen I have from the Apple wasn’t ordered against my MacBook’s serial number, so True Tone isn’t working. I’m wondering if the calibration tool could fix the screen glitch (dim/white animations)

@ayushmishr27428 - I’m sorry I guess I picked the wrong system specs. I grab the info from this great site EveryMac

So YES! The Liquid Retina XDR display requires calibration unlike the older display as this display offers back light zoning. So you will need to get another display this time directly from Apple or let one of their authorized repair shops get the display and calibrate it. As you need access to the tool which is locked behind a paywall.

I got the Apple Original screen through a local repair shop, they have a connection with an Apple Service Center and were able to arrange a brand-new display from Apple at a lower cost. However, it wasn’t ordered against my MacBook’s serial number.

Will the calibration tool work if the serial no is mismatched ?
