Can I save my iMac?

Hello,

I have a iMac Retina 5K, 27 inch, Late 2015. See picture.

Let me explain....

About 2 years ago, I got infected by a virus (just before that episode, everything was working fine). After scanning and eliminating that virus, it never came back to normal. As of now, it takes forever to startup, opening an application is painfully long, I cannot access my password from System Preference. I am a musician and I cannot use my Universal Audio Apollo 4 in Logic. Opening Mail is an adventure by itself. After a while, it takes more than 5 minutes to read the mail. You get the picture. I feel I can still use my iMac and maybe repair it?

What would be the update to repair it? Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Hi,

Have you considered that the hard drive is failing?

One of the symptoms of drive failure can be system running slowly.

Another can be not enough free space left.

If you have a backup you could also consider factory restore if you think the drive is still okay, but given that it’s 7 years old now it may be on its last legs.

Hope this helps

Hello Helpful Larry,

Thanks for your reply. I did restore my iMac a few times following Apple's procedure but still the same. I guess I have to change the Hard Drive? Do you have any suggestions? I have no idea where to start. Can I upgrade to something more powerful? I will also consider upgrading memory at the same time.

Thanks.

What is you drive setup? I often encounter failing drive is the root issue, more so with Fusion Drives!

Let’s see if we can get you going, but before we do you need to salvage you data copy off (backup) as much as you can as it’s likely the drive/s will need reformatting.

So, once your set, launch Disk Utility an clicking you internal drive clink in Disk First Aid. Depending how much stuff you have on the drive and how fragmented it is it may take awhile.

Hello Dan,

Thanks for your reply. I already performed the task you have suggested. Looks like my drive (see Helpful Larry's answer) is on its last leg.

What do you think?

@gretschmann - What’s your drive setup? Post a snapshot of your drive using Disk Utility make sure you’ve selected the physical drive not the partitions

Dan, checked below please.

@gretschmann - So you do have a Fusion Drive setup, as we can see the caching SSD.

Did you make copies or a good backup of your stuff?

At this point you’ll need to create a bootable external drive so you can reformat the HDD and remove the SSD as you will want to replace it with a larger blade SSD (1.0TB ideally) but you’ll need to wait until you see how salvaging the HDD goes.

Hello Dan,

Since I am no computer expert here is my comprehension of your last message about bootable external drive.

I did a "save" of my iMac on my external disk (LaCie Ruggeble drive). Is it enough? Did I miss something? Maybe you can direct me on that direction?

Also, is changing my hard drive for an SSD (I very like that idea) will suffice to restore my iMac? I heard some problem with fan speed after making the upgrade. What do you think?

Thank you too much.
