Help Needed: MagSafe 1 Charger Not Charging After Fuse Bypass

Genuine Apple chargers are expensive and shipping costs would make it even more-so. Let's try to save this one.

---------------------------

Charger: 60W MBP MagSafe Adapter (A1344)

Laptop: MBP late-2011 13" A1278

Story: I plugged it into an old outlet in an old hotel in India, and I wake up to find the charger not working anywhere. Other chargers work okay and SMC reset done. CoconutBattery says the battery is okay. Culprit is the charger.

Diagnostics: I checked the primary fuse (the brown box near the AC input - apparently a "4A time-delay type fuse", and it had no continuity. With so much glue and padding and shielding everywhere, I really didn't risk probing much further. No swollen or blown capacitors.

Troubleshooting: Here's the fun part, I got some thick wire and bypassed the primary fuse by soldering it to the existing little prongs on the opposite side of the PCB. It kind of worked... I can get a green light, but it makes a buzzing noise sometimes depending on the position of the L-shaped DC laptop port.

Current status: The green light turns on. However the MBP isn't charging normally nor holding its charge. Occasionally I'll get the DC end in the some kind of position where an orange light comes but it's rare.

I attached a screenshot of iStatMenu's power stats. I don't really have a reference point, but I'm pretty sure that DC-In should be more than 0.08 amps. Though there are some intermittent spikes when charger is wiggled at the laptop-side and it buzzes. I found that by wiggling the DC charger end (which connects to the laptop), the buzzing will start and stop (kind of like when a your old earbuds don't get sound unless they're in the right position). Which is odd because that part of the charging cord was fine before and I didn't suspect any problems there, but I could be wrong. (see video and photos attached for demonstration).

Hey after some random wiggling - I have an orange light! Not sure if its actually pulling enough voltage/amps etc. though. Hard to reproduce. Yes okay I can get an orange charging light and get it to pull ~2a and charge but only when it's buzzing. Something's weird. Without the buzzing - there's not adequate charge.

Interesting. Yeah the trackpad and my smartphone's touchscreen (connected via usb) all acted up while it was orange-light & buzzing.

Good stuff.

Solder joint broke on the fuse bypass -- pushed it back into place. Some sparks. A pop. This charger is dead.

I'm going to experiment with 60W USB-C charger as I already have the USB-C to Magsafe adapter.

Lets look at the MagSafe connector ends both the cable and the system. Often times the one-wire connection is not stable. Post the pics so we can see things as well. You may only need some cleaning, or the cord is to far gone.

You also have a second issue here as you are missing the AC power cord ground! This is where the hot side of the outlet maybe entering the system on the wrong side when other AC devices are the polar opposite! So the case of the system and the other devices metal surfaces are not the same voltage! The Apple cord is polarized and the socket needs to be as well. You can use an adapter unit but you also should connect the ground tab to the outlet boxes metal screw in the middle, hopefully the box is wired to ground.

I would recommend just getting a replacement MagSafe charger as bypassing the fuse as well as having such an exposed charger outside of a case is just not wise.

Do make sure you get a real Apple unit as many knockoffs are so badly made they will hurt your system or even you!

Many years ago one of my engineering clients forgot his charger! He was able to find one at a local store, as he was there a day early. He needed to go for dinner with his team and left the system plugged in as they went out. When returning to the hotel they encountered a bunch of fire trucks at the hotel. As it turned out the charger in his room started a fire burning the desk and drapes making a smoky mess. He was able to get his stuff and the hotel gave him another room for the night but all his cloths where smoky and his system lets say was not working either so the presentation for the client went up in smoke! The hotel sued the company 3 million USD and won! For the damages and loss income due to the fire. That was an expensive Knockoff charger!

Hi Dan.

> you are missing the AC power cord ground!

I don't understand how you saw/ascertained that. It may explain why the trackpad and my usb-connected phone go crazy while it's buzzing.

I've been making small updates to the main post here and there.

You wanted to see the dc-end of the charger? Here I'll upload it.

Also yeah I think the outlet I'm current using has the hot & neutral backwards. I should test another outlet. Pretty sure it'll be acting up and buzzing.

@breathlungs - There are two point of ground within the charger the back of the AC clip which when using a three prong cord offers the connection. Then within the MagSafe cable the outer braid is the shield for EMI and offers chassis ground to the case.

Your MagSafe cord is badly degraded! You need a new cord and frankly you need a new charger as well!

@breathlungs the amps are being pulled form your computer and not the MagSafe. Yes, you would need a new cable, no doubt about that, but you are having issues with your Magsafe. It's possible your computer is trying to pull to many amps causing possible overheating of an already "tired" MagSafe. The buzzing could originate form the coils, or the transformer in your power supply. I am not fond of the fix on your fuse, since hat will not protect your MagSafe and may actually lead to its demise.

Not sure what you have going on with your Trackpad but If I remember right you have the battery right under there. I think it's time to open your computer up and see what is going on with it a well.
