Help Needed: MagSafe 1 Charger Not Charging After Fuse Bypass
Genuine Apple chargers are expensive and shipping costs would make it even more-so. Let's try to save this one.
---------------------------
Charger: 60W MBP MagSafe Adapter (A1344)
Laptop: MBP late-2011 13" A1278
Story: I plugged it into an old outlet in an old hotel in India, and I wake up to find the charger not working anywhere. Other chargers work okay and SMC reset done. CoconutBattery says the battery is okay. Culprit is the charger.
Diagnostics: I checked the primary fuse (the brown box near the AC input - apparently a "4A time-delay type fuse", and it had no continuity. With so much glue and padding and shielding everywhere, I really didn't risk probing much further. No swollen or blown capacitors.
Troubleshooting: Here's the fun part, I got some thick wire and bypassed the primary fuse by soldering it to the existing little prongs on the opposite side of the PCB. It kind of worked... I can get a green light, but it makes a buzzing noise sometimes depending on the position of the L-shaped DC laptop port.
Current status: The green light turns on. However the MBP isn't charging normally nor holding its charge. Occasionally I'll get the DC end in the some kind of position where an orange light comes but it's rare.
I attached a screenshot of iStatMenu's power stats. I don't really have a reference point, but I'm pretty sure that DC-In should be more than 0.08 amps. Though there are some intermittent spikes when charger is wiggled at the laptop-side and it buzzes. I found that by wiggling the DC charger end (which connects to the laptop), the buzzing will start and stop (kind of like when a your old earbuds don't get sound unless they're in the right position). Which is odd because that part of the charging cord was fine before and I didn't suspect any problems there, but I could be wrong. (see video and photos attached for demonstration).
Hey after some random wiggling - I have an orange light! Not sure if its actually pulling enough voltage/amps etc. though. Hard to reproduce. Yes okay I can get an orange charging light and get it to pull ~2a and charge but only when it's buzzing. Something's weird. Without the buzzing - there's not adequate charge.
