No charge even with new battery installed

I recently installed a brand new battery in my MacBook Pro Mid-2010 (7,1) after it went completely dead. It runs perfectly fine but the battery is not getting a charge. The magsafe adapter does not light up, the battery symbol has the lighting symbol to indicate that it is charging, but the system reports says it is not charging. I've tried resetting the pram and the smc but that isn't working.

What could be the problem?
