My upper screen on my 3DS XL causes my 3ds to crash when moved back

it just turns off when I move the upper screen further back from the middle. This has first appeard today aka the time of writing this. I tried pushing the ribbon cables back a bit but that didnt help.

Any ideas on what could be the cause?

As @wicker9066 already said, it's almost definitely an issue with one of the cables running through the hinge. However, there are some things I think I should add.

First and foremost, replacing the upper lcd will NOT "most likely result in killing your DS". It is marked extremely difficult for a reason, and requires serious caution and patience, but it's entirely doable if you have both of those.

Second, that *pop* sound when it crashes points to a problem with your speaker cables (or sometimes display cables, but both screens work so that's not likely). Unplug that ribbon, clean both the connector and cable with isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and a toothbrush, and plug it back in.

If it doesn't work then, you'll have to take the top off to look for any damage and probably replace the speaker ribbon

I said, it would most likly kill it from my own experience of trying this repair four times and having the upper LCD ribbon cable tear every time I tried to feed it through the hinge.

This is most defintly a problem with either the ribbon cables or their connections to the screen/motherboard. Try taking the ribbon cables out of their slots on the board, then putting them back in carefully. Then, if this doesn't work, open the top and inspect the screen. Then open the hinge and inspect where the cable is bent back and forth, as it might be cut. Nintendo 3DS XL Upper LCD Display Replacement
Note: This is extremely difficult and will most likly result in killing you DS.
