Trying to find a Cell Provider

AT@T kicked me off their system because this is a Xiaomi. Are there any Cell Providers that will support this phone?

Hi @davecarl

There must be another reason for being disconnected from AT&T as the make and model of the phone shouldn't be an issue?

If the phone is unlocked, it should work with any mobile service phone provider that you choose.

Here are the specifications showing the network signalling bands supported by the phone. They include frequencies used in the USA.

If the phone is locked to AT&T then it will need to be unlocked to be able to work with another carrier. Although if it were locked then that means that they would have supported it in the first place and therefore the make and model wouldn't be a reason to disconnect you.

Thanks for your quick reply. I had been using AT&T for a few years and they told me they were no longer going to support this phone. When I go to other carriers and they ask for the IMEI number, they say they wont support this number....what gives!

@davecarl

There was an issue back in 2021 regarding Xiamio's "business model" and also their perceived links to the Chinese military and they were banned from selling in the USA for a while but this was overturned in the courts.

There's a lot of info about this online but it is all dated from back then or into 2022 but it seems that some (all?) carriers can decide whether or not to support a brand of phone.

As to why they don't you may have to ask them as the only reason that I've found is that they say that the phones haven't been "certified" for use in the USA which makes no sense given how long you've been using it.

Definitely more a political issue than a technical issue I think, but that's only me.

@jayeff Might be a mix of shady political nonsense and VoLTE whitelisting. AT&T is well known for extorting OEMs to enable it on the network and whitelisting the phone. That's why I ditched them; I want choice.

@nick

That makes sense.

Maybe the phone manufacturers should unite to force the carriers to be more reasonable. They both need each other after all

Thanks for the info.

Cheers

@jayeff My Moto G5 died with the initial 3G sunset for the same reason; VoLTE ready, ransom not paid. I put it out of service well before due to the lack of USB-C and I had it for the 2 years I keep budget phones.

LOL AT THE DEATHSTAR BEING REASONABLE. They do it to sell their phones which are also perma locked on the bootloader and carrier locked. They don't pull these stunts on Apple because Apple would chew them a new a-hole real quick.

I hope it isn't China vs US politics, but that's why I STRONGLY CAUTIONED OP to have a plan B. LG is an absolute hard no given Sprint versions were nerfed due to their decrepit network.

I had a grey market RAZR V3i in my teens from Europe in the US (mainly to avoid Motorola iTunes). It worked fine on the US 2G bands (not 3G, the European 3G bands were different) and that phone was not certified and I did this when AT&T was Cinglular. It was never always this hard to have grey market phones. BUT I think it had to be manually added to their system due to the phone's grey market nature and I was on my own. It was the price I paid for grey market hardware in the US.

I'd be asking the deathstar directly if it's because it's Chinese if I were the account holder and putting their refusal to support it on an open propane flame.

HINT: Mint will flag the phone, but let you say yes you accept the risk like the old days unless it is just never happening like the 3G call fallback phones :-). THE WAY IT SHOULD BE! I assumed the risk when I bought the weird parallel market phone. They didn't even ask IIRC; I just bought a SIM card and stuck it in my iP 12 at the time, then eSIMd my 15 Pro.

The reason is likely network upgrades. AT&T is moving full steam ahead with 5G, so many older phones like this are being dropped to make room for their limited licenses. It's likely VoLTE since AT&T charges a ransom for it on their network Xaiomi never paid AT&T; my Moto G5 suffered the same fate because they didn't pay the AT&T VoLTE extortion fee.

Look at T-Mobile or the many T-Mobile MVNOs; they don't pull stunts like the one AT&T pulled with these phones... AS often. Maybe in some cases, but I've ever seen T-Mobile or the T-Mobile MVNOs reject a phone at the rate AT&T does. If T-Mobile coverage is roadkill in your area, it's time for a new phone :(. If in doubt, try with their test drive hotspot.

I'm not going to debate whether Xiaomi and Huawei phones are CCP spy devices, even in the US; even if they are, I'm not touching that mess as it doesn't apply in your situation. You may need a sacrificial phone with an IMEI# that's well accepted as this is a Chinese phone and the current political situation with China; get an older but fresh Motorola or Samsung (even a Google Pixel) that works for the initial carrier activation like the Moto G7 or a similarly new model just to CYA. That may be why the rejections are so common, or it never supported VoLTE which was also a LG disease for Sprint versions of their phones. You'll know soon enough once you swap SIM cards. This workaround eliminates Verizon as a potential carrier as the active IMEI# has to match and they're honestly trying to compete with AT&T to see who can be as repulsive about blocking otherwise usable devices over political matters and VoLTE extortion fees.

That's unfortunate that they would do such a thing like that to you I would suggest unlocking your phone from its provider and then getting a prepaid SIM card from either Verizon AT&t boost Mobile or any of those prepaid providers you can normally get cards from Walmart rite aid some gas stations Dollar tree family Dollar or from the provider itself but most of the times they give you a big hassle just to get a card so going to a small store like Dollar general will have these cards provided for you most of them are a dollar to get started you just have to get the card and activate it with service I hope this helps

OP still needs service, AND BEING A CHINESE PHONE COULD CAUSE ISSUES. They'll need to borrow an active SIM card if they want to be sure, or buy another phone for the IMEI# to work around the issue.
