Won't charge while on

The laptop only charges when it's plugged off or when there's not much going on in the OS, tried many different chargers but it refuses to charge. It blinks the power and battery LEDs when it's on the charger.

As with many devices that use a rechargeable battery, when a charger is plugged in, the device (In your case, your computer) will take the power from the charger instead of charging the battery, which is common among many devices, including mine.

If you want to charge the battery, you will have to power off your device (computer), place it on the charger, and let it charge until full

Note: Your computer must be fully shut down or in hibernation (the process of the computer saving everything that you are doing and shutting down so that it returns when powered on, like sleep mode but it fully shuts down the computer). Placing the computer in sleep mode may not allow the battery to charge.

Hi @wiiyz

It may be that the battery is failing and the charger can't do both when the laptop is turned on i.e. run the laptop and charge a failing battery at the same time.

Create a battery report to check the condition of the battery.

When you have the report, compare the Design Capacity value versus the Full Charge Capacity value in the report. For a good battery they will nearly be the same value. You can calculate the current battery condition as a percentage of its original factory condition by using the formula: Full Charge value x 100 ÷ Design Capacity value.

If the current condition is <40% you may wish to consider replacing the battery soon

@jayeff This could be the reason, but it could also be that the device can't handle both, good battery or not. I have a tablet that is less than a year old that has a similar issue but is resolved by powering off the device and letting it charge.

@jri_creator

That's not how it left the factory (reputable brands wouldn't design it that way) perhaps it could be due to software updates or it is a hardware fault.

Although it is not unknown for new batteries to fail early either ;-)
