submerged in oil. Touch screen not working properly.

Accidentally fell into a bucket of new motor oil. I cleaned off most of it and then removed the S pen, tray and sim card, and it stayed horizontal for several days. I have read these newer phones have good gaskets and maybe no oil got inside. But with a magnifying glass I can see oil near the ports entry points. I do not want to open it if I don't have to. I know the speaker openings might be another vulnerability. I'm seeking advice from an expert with this model: Galaxy S22 Ultra. Is there anybody out there who can give advice?

Also, I have not turned it back on in days so I don't know the extent of the damage if any. I'm assuming turning it back on is not advisable and I'm considering opening it to examine it for oil. But seeking first maybe some guidance on if that's necessary or smart

i have an update. I turned it on by accident and noticed that it seemed to work fine and there was nothing wrong with it. However after a while the touch screen stopped working properly. So, now I'm looking for advice on what to do at this point based on my phone model and situation. Thank you.

Hi @gregarkwri91283

Check the colour of the LDI (liquid damage indicator), located in the SIM tray slot. Click on Liquid or corrosion evidence.

If the LDI is pink then the oil has entered into the phone and has possibly caused more problems

The impurities in the liquid causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and any liquid residue. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives which may leave conductive residues and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the liquid may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after doing all this the phone might work OK

Here is the ifixit Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra repair guide that may help

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional mobile phone repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair.

Hi,

Thank you. That was exactly the type of response I was looking for. @jayeff there is a complication however. I do not believe oil triggers the LDI since it's different than water. I read a few articles and it's true. At this point I am certain oil got inside because the touch screen stopped working. But my LDI seems to be like an off-white solid color. Far from pink or red. That's why I concluded oil will not cause the LDI to change colors. I also read that uncooked rice is ineffective at pulling out oil from electronics. Therefore I believe you're right that I need to take it apart and try to remove it with ISOproppnol alcohol 99%. We need more literature related to this specific scenario because the guidance mainly focuses on water. Your answer was/is the best out there. Hopefully it hits on google for other people. Thank you.

Hi @gregarkwri91283

Appears as though the oil may have discoloured the LDI, as normally the LDI are white not off white, unless perhaps the phone is being used in a dusty environment. Off white colour does seem that it was at least in contact with it.

Using rice to fix electronics liquid damage is a myth. It doesn't work! Rice is for dinner, not repair

Rice is a hard case type of seed so for it to absorb moisture it has to be in contact with it. It absorbs moisture from the air because it is in contact with it. Bit hard through the case of a phone though. ;-).

Most liquids (except distilled water) contain impurities which to varying degrees conduct electricity. There is always power at some points on the systemboard in laptops, phones, cameras, watches etc i.e. any portable electronic device. This is because the power button is not a power isolating button. It's function is to relay the intentions of the user to the operating system in the device e.g. turn on, turn off, sleep, wake etc. Think of the device as being in an extremely low power state when it is turned off and not that it is disconnected from any power at all.

The liquid can create unwanted electrical circuit paths between components that were never meant to be electrically in contact with each other in the operation of the device and this could damage them.

The best advice with liquid damage is to disconnect the battery (and any other power source) as soon as possible to minimize any electrical damage and then clean the systemboard with IPA 99%+ to get rid of any corrosion which may cause physical damage due to the galvanic reaction between dissimilar metals used on the board being in contact with each other due to the liquid

To some rice may appear to have worked and they may have been lucky but it wouldn't surprise if the device had problems further down the track. Maybe not in days or weeks but perhaps in the months after.

Cheers
