Fan noise after cpu upgrade

After upgrading my late 2015 i5 6500 /R9 M380 /32 GB /250GB blade only to an i7 6700k cpu and added a 4Tb Sata SSD the fan jumps to 2000-2400 rpm under any mild graphics demand (nearly all screen savers).

I did replace the thermal paste except on the video ram where I used owl tree thermal pads because the paste left a gap.

I know heat is an issue with iMacs but I also have a late 14 i5 3.5ghz/ R9 m290x/ 32GB and a 2019 i5 3 ghz/Radeon Pro 570x/ 128GB that make no fan noise when running the identical screen savers.

I was planning on upgrading the cpu in the other two but concerned it may cause the same problem.

Thank you for your help!

Hi I have exactly the same issue and my machine is running extremely slowly. I used artic paste on the gpu and cpu but heat pads on the chips surrounding the gpu ( I assume they are gpu ram chips?}

I might have to back to the original i5 processor because I can’t figure out the problem. Running Macs Fan software, I can link the fan speed to the core temperature and it basically turns off. All the temperatures are very low??

First I would see what the onboard diagnostics tells you. Then I would install a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro I find it’s presentation of the information the system gives you is a bit easier to comprehend. It also can offer a more real-time view of things.

Until you see what’s cooking as well as where the cooling is breaking down it’s just guessing.

Well I just took the whole thing apart and noticed that on at least Vram there was no mark on the heatsink from the thermal pads. So I think that either they are too thin or that the heatsink wasn't seated correctly. It has 4 spring bolts and two were jammed, so that they didn't push in and out against the spring.

Question is, if the Vram chips were overheating, would the iMac put the CPU into some sort of idle mode?

I’ve ordered some Artic T-3 0.5mm,1mm and 1.5mm thermal pads (100mm by 20mm x4). Hopefully, that will fix the issue and I haven’t damaged the VRAM chips. If it is still not working then I will re-fit the i5 cpu.

I did run Etrecheck but that just said the system was slow and show up any hardware issues?

Cheers john
