Got this one in and customer said the screen started going out from the bottom to the top. When I got it there was still 1/2" of display at the top. Plugged it in to charge overnight and opened it just to find it dead. Have been unable to find any answers on this one.

What do you mean Mayer? Is the screen blank on one half? White, grey or black? Is there a sharp divide or is there some herringbone or other video distortion.
What does an external display show?

@danj The screen is now totally black.except for a 1/8"white strip on top. I can see part of the Apple and it is saying Reset Password. I get no boot tone.
@mayer - Did you get a clean image on the external display? If you do the displays T-CON board has failed. This will need a new display.
I second what Dan has suggested. I have seen similar issues with my clients, and replacing the display assembly has fixed it. Definitely check an external monitor. If the image is clear, the problem is definitely the display has failed. (The screen itself is likely fine, but Apple doesn't really make it possible to safely and cleanly remove the screen from the rest of the assembly... but I digress.)

Hi mate,
Sounds like it could be a Flexgate matter. I've just done a repair on mine where the screen eventually died but shining a light on it showed that it was a backlight failure. There's a few ways to repair this without going to Apple but I went with the option of cutting off the (obviously broken) backlight flex cable at the point of breakage and soldering on a new cable, allowing for a longer length.
