Repair guides and support for hair irons, also known as hair straighteners.

What logic board component is this?

I am currently trying to resurrect a relatively expensive hair straightener. It is a Croc Infrared Titanium Ceramic 1.5-inch Flat Iron. Upon disassembly of the logic board, I did find an obvious burned out component. It does look like a resistor, but does not quite fit the pattern. It is 9.6mm in length, which would make it 1/2 watt. The part that does not look like a resistor are the ring markings. From what is left it looks like:

Black

Grey

third ring not clearly identifiable due to damage

Black

In the normal resistor world, the third ring would be the multiplier, the fourth the tolerance. Black is not an option for that. So anybody have an idea what I got here? Anybody have a flat iron apart to let me know what component I am looking at? I did try to find any schematic or diagram without success. Thanks for the help.

UPDATE

Any chance this could be a capacitor? I do know that some of them use ring markings as well.

Update Hope this is a better picture.

http://www.csgnetwork.com/resistcolcalc.... you've probably looked at this site...

Thanks pollytintop. Yes I have, but it does not match anything I come up with.

I'd just walk in to the local shop and ask them to work it out..but then I'm a girl and they take pity on me! Seriously though it's worth a shot, our local repairman often has all sorts of parts and info that is far quicker to ask him than spend all day on line. When I look at your photo it looks like there are 3colour bands side by side..white/orange/yellow (odd! maybe it's white/space/yellow?) and possibly brown to the far right? As you say black gives 0 so.. I tried searching by length of the part/ceramic but there is no match that looks like your part.

Yes, it is the space that makes it look like extra rings. The part that makes me go hhhmmm is the placement of the rings. It is to symmetric on the body, unlike the resistors I have and the color black on both ends. I tried the store route, but had no luck at all. The salesperson just gave me a blank stare :-) I did contact the manufacturer (no answer yet) as well as Mouser and Digikey reps.....I guess will see. Thanks for your help....

Can we please get a closer picture of the component? When I try to blow this up it distorts. Also a picture of where it sits on the board, both side, could possibly help.

You know, I would probably ignore the two black outer rings and only go the inner ones. The first looks brown to me, the last one looks white, but it's hard to tell from the image what the two middle ones are. I'll bet that's your ohm rating right there.

Also, look on the circuit board for another resistor that looks to have the same colors on it. Sometimes resistors come in pairs or groupings that are all the same ohm ratings.

I have a CROC model BC-CR1. It has a 300 ohm resistor mounted on the opposite side of the digital LED box (that displays the errors). All my components look good, but I'm getting error 014 080. No idea what to do from here. I may try to contact a croc engineer, but the front desk is a pretty nasty firewall. $30-60 for repair, if unable to repair, $105 new. Yuk, they should let us have a go considering we're getting error codes. Not cool.

I have a need to see the original board it was on too. Please post a pic or email it to me so i can solve this riddle.

RIDDLE ME THIS

RIDDLE ME THAT

SEND ME A PIC

SO I CAN SEE WHAT THE !@#$ THAT IS..:(

Update

SIMPLY LOOK ON THE BOARD AND TRY TO IDENTIFY THE FORMULA BEING USED

IS IT IN A SERIAL OR PARALLEL FORM?

IS IT A RLC?

have you hooked it up to a DVM and seen any ohms? If so take the reading and match the colors that you do see. Are they closely related? Faded red looks brown..etc

I sure did do that right from the start....got it resolved by getting it repaired through the manufacturer. Thanks for your help. I did not even realize that this question was still marked as unresolved
