Need to replace the 128 GB hard drive. How do I move my data over?

I have a 2011 MacBook Air that I need to replace the 128 GB hard drive?

I need to mirror my present drive to new 256 GB drive and then install it. Please advise how, thanks.

First here’s the guide you’ll need to follow to put in the replacement drive MacBook Air 11インチ Mid 2011 SSDの交換

You will need to upgrade to High Sierra if you are using a NVMe drive as both the systems firmware and OS have the needed updates to support it. Make sure you have the OS installer make sure it’s current

The best way is to make a full TimeMachine backup to an external drive. Once done you can remove your current drive and put in the replacement.

Then, plug in the external drive and when the system starts up press the Option key to get to the Startup manager to select your external so the system boots up.

Once the system boots up you should be able to launch Disk Utility to format your new drive, then run the needed OS installer you got from the App Store.

At the end of the OS install process you will be asked if you have data that’s needs to be migrated. Simply say yes, the installer will locate the TimeMachine image on the external drive.

There is no cloning or mirroring apps needed! And frankly they don’t work anymore with APFS volumes you are now running.

Thank you! There is a physical issue with my hard drive (confirmed by an Apple rep). Probably because of this my computer is stuck with FileVault, and because of this I cannot upgrade to High Sierra, stuck with Yosemite. Any changes to your advice knowing my specific situation? I have about 30 Gb free space. Thank you!

@woodcrest - Connect a fresh external drive and backup your stuff. You should be able to run TimeMachine to make the backup otherwise you’ll need to manually copy off as much as you can.

Do you have another Apple device as you’ll need it to setup a fresh drive with your current user account, otherwise you’ll loose access to your iTunes, iCloud and App Store purchases.

I would try to find someone local who can help you. Some of the Apple Staff have limited skills with these older systems and technically the managers frown when they do. A good independent Mac repair person can give you the needed TLC.

Can I use an SD card for TimeMachine?

After I backup then I remove the old, install the new, then set it up with my IPhone?

Thanks!

@woodcrest - You need a USB or Thunderbolt (version 1 or 2) drive. You really cant use SD cards and no the files can’t really be accessed by you phone

@danj Thanks again, please explain a bit more of "you'll need another Apple device as you’ll need it to setup a fresh drive with your current user account". How is this done? Thanks

A built-in Time Machine backup solution would be my go-to on a Mac:
