Makes total sense! Back in the day we often used cloning as it was faster, as long as there isn’t any corruption and one it going between the same drive (the early sector type of cloning), then people wanted to jump to bigger drives which sector based cloning failed so Block cloning came out that let us migrate to larger drives. But the OS’s then selves didn’t stop innovating! Cloning was coming to the end of usefulness! So if you have a HFS or HFS+ data drive a good current cloner app will work! But that’s not what you are doing here! We are working with a boot drive and likely working with APFS which both kills cloning as an option.

So how do you move your stuff over??

Surprise! Apple gave you the needed tools: TimeMachine and Migration Assistant

Use TimeMachine to backup and use Migration Assistant to either recover from a backup or connect your old drive directly to your new system via an external case or back to back from your original system to your new system.

So what’s different here?? Unlike Cloning both of these tools use a more advanced file copy method which sadly is a bit slower as it’s also verifying block by block so you know the data’s integrity is good.

So you’ll need to connect your original drive to your new system and run Migration Assistant.

But you first need to setup your system with macOS using internet recovery or better yet setting up a USB thumb drive as a bootable OS installer as often the internet installer puts too old an OS on your system and NVMe drives requires Mojave or newer to even work.
