Change Logic Board 500MHz to Logic Board 900MHz

Hi,

I recently got an iBook G3 M6497 (500MHz/384MB RAM) for free from a friend. Is it possible to dismantle the entire iBook and put a 900MHz Logic Board in there?

It states on the parts page that that Logic Board only works in:

600 MHz (16 VRAM) G3 12" iBooks

700, 800, or 900 MHz G3 12" iBooks

But the enclosure seems identical, can I risk it or is it a no-go?

In terms of the logic board connectivity, the only difference I see is that a small connector that was to the right of the speaker connector in the 500 MHz version is moved to the back of the board near the fan connector. But I can't for the life of me figure out what, if anything, actually goes in that connector!!! Apple is known for random unused connectors on logic boards. This may be another instance of an unused connector.

The board is shaped slightly differently, however, so this frame is necessary (the one for the 700 Opaque/800/900 MHz machines).

Good luck!

If you can find a 900MHz logic board already installed in his internal metal frame then the other parts from the 500MHz should fit.

I couldn't really find a 900MHz logic board in it's internal frame but I did find an internal frame (originally from a 800MHz iBook) sold separately. Can I assemble that 900MHz logic board onto that 800MHz internal frame?

I'm not sure. I'll let someone else answer this question. There are sometimes small differences in the iBook logic boards form factor.

I have done a few of these upgrades - what is different is the metal frame, the fan(M6497 has four blades), the heat sink, the modem card and the metal pan where the airport card sits. The modem card has a different hole pattern for the screws (which I never install now) and the pan can be easily bent on one corner to fit the new fan but all the parts are easily found on ebay for cheap. One thing that can't be changed is the reset button - located on the left side on the M6497's it is on the back on the A1005's. The pins are next to the fan on the new boards, if you want to have access to the reset button the best way is to extend the wires to the old position. Last thing I can think of, there are a few screws/holes that are different so don't drive yourself crazy if you have an extra screw or are short one.
