Asus UX430U not turning on, not charging

Hi. Two days ago, after not being used for a week, i booted the laptop, using the power chord. It had a recent Asus bluetooth driver update driver request which i went ahead and let it install. After i hit the Finish button i noticed that the laptop went on battery power and the little icon showing the power chord disappeared. I thought it was a coincidence or power chord got loose, but was not the case.

I unplugged and plugged back the chord however the battery led didn’t turn on and the laptop was still on battery power alone. Restarted few times, nothing. Tried the EDC reset and its in the same state. Now the battery is depleted and not charging.

I tested the charger to see if it has current running through and it does.

Not sure what to do. Though it looks like a power port issue, the fact all started after that driver update doesn’t give me peace of mind :) the power port and the laptop itself are well taken care of and not abused.

What else can I do?

Thank you

Hi. I had the laptop checked at a local service and the DC adaptor is fine, its providing the proper output, the DC port is fine. The issue was indeed, somehow, the install of the latest (as of 01/05/2022) Intel BT drivers : Inter PRO Wireless 22.130.0.2. I removed them and after a shutdown + battery reset procedure and restart it recognized the charger and charged the laptop just fine.

I had the same BT driver reinstalled and the issue happened again. Performed the same exact troubleshooting and now its fine again.

So, i will run with the BT drivers that Windows installed by default for now.

Thank you for your support.

Since you have power in the charger it's a bit hard to say what else it may be caused by.

I would start by following these steps provided by Asus on their FAQ page.

Asus Support - Troubleshooting

Hope this helped! :D

Hi,

You may have to prove that the DC-In jack is electrically OK.

What can sometimes happen with this type of connector is that the centre pin (+ve input) breaks in the jack causing an open circuit in the power supply path between the charger and the motherboard.

You cannot see this as it is internal to the jack. You have to prove it electrically, by opening the laptop and then using either a voltmeter (with the charger connected) to see if the voltage is reaching the motherboard or by using an Ohmmeter (with the charger disconnected) and proving continuity between the jack's input i.e. +ve centre pin and -ve outer ring connector and the jack's output connections on the motherboard.

If the jack is OK then there is a motherboard problem.

Driver updates can cause problems but not the kind that would prevent a laptop from receiving power from a charger. At least not Bluetooth drivers. Battery management drivers can prevent a battery from being charged but again not stop the laptop from indicating that there is external power and using it. Just my view on this.

Here's a teardown video that may help to gain access to the DC-In jack so that it can be tested.
