Why isn't my battery charging? M1 chip

Hi guys,

I recently bought a MacBook Pro 2020 m1 for a bargain price as it had a coffee spill on the keyboard. When I acquired it, it worked fine as did all the keys etc but they were crunchy when pressed and the backlight had faded in the middle, so I decided to change the keyboard (more info on that at the bottom).

When I put the MacBook back together, it turned on and the keyboard now works fine, but the battery won't charge. I have reseated the battery connection to the Logic Board many times and I have checked the connection of the Thunderbolt ports to the Logic Board, all seems well, it just will not charge. At one point I had an 'X' through the battery, but now I can get Coconut battery to read the battery data, it just won't charge.

I am using the charger that came with it, I have also tried a MacBook 12” Retina charger and swapped the cables, so it's not that. I am aware the 12” Retina charger couldn't even power a potato, but I tried anyway.

Any ideas? I'm stumped.

By the way - there isn't much information regarding the keyboard change on these, so I will say that the keyboard is rivoted on, as well as screwed on. So unless you have a microscopic rivot gun or you're very steady with some metal adhesive, don't bother. I applied tiny amounts of thick adhesive to the top of the rivots and was very careful not to let it run, worked a treat, but I only took that risk as the MacBook owes me very little money.

Thanks!

Andy.

By the way - there are absolutely no traces of liquid on the Logic Board and before the keyboard change, the battery worked fine.

Was there any liquid on the actual logic board when you tore it down to replace the keyboard?

No, it was fine. Also, the battery worked fine before taking it apart and (apparently) did so for a couple of months prior to me buying it.

Well, the bad news is you do have a logic board issue ;-{

Apple is using Texas Instruments CD3217B12 – USB and power delivery IC’s (x2) which are on the backside of the logic board which is more exposed to liquid damage dripping down. Review this M1 MacBook Teardowns: Something Old, Something New You’ll likely need a good microscope to see what got damaged it could be a component shorted out. But without schematics and boardview drawings it will be difficult to isolate out where the power rails are.

It just seems odd that it was all still working before the keyboard change? I guess I'll cut my losses and sell it for parts. Thank you for your informative reply (as always)!

@andyc7117 - I would put it aside for now as I'm sure Apple will be releasing some repair info. Don't know what yet and its still possible something will fall off the back of a truck ;-}

When The IC chip is damaged the battery will stop charging after the battery is depleted beyond a certain point. This is a problem rarely with PC users. As we tend to Shut ours Down or leave them on, Where Mac Users are accustomed to letting theirs sleep because of long boot times.

@johndavis82570 - What does this have to do with this issue?

BTW - While I would agree with the statement with older HDD based systems both PC and Mac. SSD based systems are much quicker either PC or Mac!

Now with newer Mac systems based on Apples SoC’s Apple systems are much faster from a cold boot and as the power required to run as well in standby still goes to Apple!

Just like how an old Ford model T won’t win a race when pitted against a 1980’s VW Beatle and both won’t beat a 2020 Fiat 500 or Mini EV! Today!
