when I turn the camera on, I get the black screen.

Coolpix L3. I tried gentle banging. Tried clearing the cable port. Here is what the camera is doing: I heard the camera open in my pocket, but that isn’t unusual. This time, though, when I turn the camera on, I get the black screen. But, if I click for the non-picture, I then get a view again. I have to check again because I’m uncertain if I get the view the 2nd time - it might take 3 shots. I think it is one shot with the black screen. It is my only camera. I can’t replace it. Can’t send it to Japan for a $250 fix. I hope someone has additional thoughts. Thank you.

@jrtx2 explain this part "when I turn the camera on, I get the black screen." in a bit more detail. What do you mean by non-picture?

Sorry about the delay, I use a PC, and hadn't checked. when I turn on the camera, the screen is black. I click to shoot, and it stays black, and no picture is taken. But then the screen shows the view. I can see what I'm shooting, and it takes the photograph. But if I turn the camera off, I am back to getting the black screen, and going through that process again.

it it set for the viewfinder instead of the LCD display?

Thank you. I did not deliberately change any settings. You think viewfinder vs LCD would black out the monitor? I am happy that I can take any photographs at all. There is an entire 8-second delay between the non-photo black monitor photo, and getting a view and an actual photograph. I think I may just back out of this thread after this post though. It’s a 15 year old camera - at least - when were these L3’s first released? Thank you. Yes. I am going to leave this discussion.
