A1706 MacBook - LCD and touch bar are blank but machine turns on.

Hello. This is possibly caused by drop damage as the corners of the machine are a little banged up.

The machine will turn on (CPU is warm, caps lock lights up, touch pad click) and you can also hear the charging “chime” when plugged in and it takes 20v and 2.5A through the charger.

But the touch bar and LCD screen remain black with no image and no backlight.

I have tried a USB-C to HDMI cable and also get no display, but I am not certain that the display would show automatically.

Also tried SMC and PRAM reset.

Unfortunately I don’t have another LCD to try.

Logic board looks spotless with no liquid damage.

Any tips?

I see now that this is a "flexgate" issue. One of the backlight cables is basically torn. Is the touchbar problem related to the torn cable or is that a separate issue?

@Matt - No you don't have FlexGate thats a very different issue.

After starting the system with the external display plugged in and using a USB or bluetooth keyboard and mouse close the lid the system should realize the external is the primary display at that point and will turn it on. Do you see your desktop and icons on it?

If not then your logic board has a major failure and its also possible the display and Touch Bar are also damaged.

Are the mouse and keyboard necessary for the external display to work? Sadly I don't have any USB-C mice or keyboards, and no adapters.

Without mouse and KB it still doesn't show a display when lid is shut.

@Matt - Hard to do anything without the input controls.;-{

See if it works without them.

Hello Matt,

Did you manage to fix the MacBook?

I have exactly the same problem.

Please share the solution, if any.

Thanks

Did you try using an external monitor? Most on the time that gets you in!

If you can then the display is damaged.

In Matts case we never got word back. While it’s possible due to the fall the display became un hinged tearing the thin ribbon cable that feeds the backlight and/or the displays data cable. Either one would require a new display in his case.

Thanks, Dan!

I replaced the display but the issue is still there. What is encouraging is that while resetting once *out of many times) I got the screen working so I saw the login screen and everything. Then just restarted the MBP and the issue continues. This tells me is that there is no issue with the display.

I am now trying to reproduce the resetting I did but unfortunately cannot...

Next week I will try with an external monitor.

Any other ideas in the meantime?

Thx!

Hi Dan!
A quick question: do you think that using a bootable usb I can reinstall a fresh OS (say High Sierra) and maybe resolve the issue?

さんによる

@aat - I doubt it, but seeing if the system runs off of the external drive migh offer more clues on whats happening in your case.

Hi @Dan

I connected an external monitor and all is there.

Furthermore, I installed High Sierra and now I have all icons on the touch bar, but unfortunately still no built in display.`

Now, cranking up the brightness I can see vertical white lines.

So most probably sth is wrong with the motherboard...

Sad, because the other day I was able to get picture to the built in display. (And I mounted a new display.)

But maybe this was just a temporary revival of the failed bart on the board.
