My phone was submerged in the water, screen has purple filter

My phone was submerged into the water when I was washing my hands, the phone didn't die and I thought that was fine, I was testing it's camera and speaker to see if it was fine, they were. And then suddenly the phone's screen had that purple filter on about 80% of the screen the apps and background is still visible. My phone is a Samsung A21s it's now in the uncooked rice for about 6 hours now. Will this do the trick? If not, what are the things I can do? I’m only a student and short on money so I don’t have anything to get the screen replaced

Same thing happened with my A21s. I dropped my phone in water picked it up and dried it off thought it would be fine. After just 1 minute the corner of the display near the speaker started to become cloudy. I thought I could dry it up with a heat gun but it was too late. Somehow water got in between the lcd layers. And it continued to spread and do even more damage causing many rows of dead pixels. Seems that the display is unfixable amd needs replacement.

Hi,

It seems as though the display has been damaged by the water (hopefully that’s all) and it may need to be replaced.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away.

Rice does not fix the problems caused by corrosion Rice is for dinner, not repair

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is a link to a teardown video for the phone which may help.

If cleaning the phone with IPA doesn’t completely fix the problem then initially as a DIY repair all you can do is to replace the display assembly and see if that is all that is wrong with it. Replacement assemblies (supplier example only to show cost) are available online. Just search for Samsung A21s LCD display replacement to find suppliers that suit you best.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

I'm planning to take it into a technician tomorrow, possibly 24 hours may have passed before I can take it to a nearest technician, I hope it's not too late. Thank you so much I'm literally crying because this phone was given to me just a week ago as a gift and now I messed it up. Other answers says it is hopeless but you gave me hope. Thank you and I will accept the answer once I've taken it to a technician

Just a quick update! While I was trying to open the phone I accidentally pushed the power button which caused it to turn on and voila! The phone's purple screen was gone! I turned it off but I am still taking your advice on taking it to a technician

take it out of the rice now!

rice can get into nooks and crannies in the phone and cause more problems.

if u havent already pull the battery. water + electricity = corrosion and blown components. if you can leave the phone by a heating duct and let it air out for a day or 2.

the screen being purple might mean that its already got some irreversible damage. but you wont know for sure until you open it.

if youre capable of atleast opening the phone that would help in drying it out fast and you can take some rubbing alcohol and clean it out a bit as well.

ive heard that you can use desiccant to dry it out instead of rice. but im not sure about that one.

I've tried using silica gel. I hope it works. Thank you

Hi @logixal ,

I always thought that dessicants had to be in contact to absorb, so whilst they can absorb moisture from the air (in contact) and surfaces I'm not sure if this would apply when sticking a phone in a bag with dessicant would absorb much through the case or even from under the shields etc.

But I may be wrong.

I think that turning it off, if on and then gently shaking it out as best as you can and just letting it dry in a warm, dry place would work just as well, if there is no other option and then open as soon as possible etc.

The myth that rice etc will help hasn't helped I'm afraid

Cheers

@jayeff very true. im not sure about the dessicant either but what could it hurt. usually theyre atleast encased in something, so you dont have to worry about it getting into charging ports or headphone jacks.

what do you think about compressed air? to blow it out ? ive heard that helps sometimes as well.

also a heating pad set to low might work? never tried that before.

Find someone with a vacuum pump (anyone who works with refrigerant has one). Put it in a container and pul a vacuum on it. The lower pressure forces water to boil off at much lower Temps, and will help remove ALL moisture from the phone. And yes I know, not everyone has access to this. But if you do.... its very handy
