@alpha404 - Your AC’s refrigerant has leaked out! For now shut it down so you don’t damage the compressor!

This gets tricky! Depending of the age of your unit you may not be able to fix it as the needed refrigerant it requires is not available any more The Different Types of Refrigerants Used in Air Conditioners and this 4 Types of Refrigerants That Are Safer Than Freon

Chlorofluorocarbon refrigerants R12 & R22 are not allowed to be sold. Depending on what your AC uses R410A can’t be used in systems that used R22. You’ll need a new base compressor unit.

The bottom line here is you should seek out someone locally who services AC and depending on what you have they will try to find the leak and recharge your system if they can.

Before you have them recharge your AC ask them how much the refrigerant costs, I hope you are sitting down! It can be very costly. So if the system leaks again you’ll need to decide if its smarter to replace your system. So weigh out the costs before you commit!

But it still works it just blows hot air instead of cool air

@alpha404 - Yes thats expected!

Your refrigerator works on the principle! The refrigerant removes the heat How Does Air Conditioning Work? When its not present it won't!

The longer you run your AC the more likely you are going to damage the compressor. The heat you are feeling is the heat from the compressor (friction!)

I hope you are leaving it off and hopefully you didn't kill your compressor $$$

I thought if the refrigerant leaked it wouldn't work at all? but we turned off the breaker for the ac

@alpha404 - Newer better whole house units have a pressure sensor which will shut the power off and display an alarm on the display unit.

@alpha404 the fan will blow ambient air. it needs to be cooled by the refrigerant

without it it just blows normal air

If your ac is calling for heat and it is instead blowing hot then it sounds like you have a heat pump, am I right? And it sounds like either your thermostat has failed or (more likely) possible the switching solenoid (can't remember the frigging term.. its where there's one pipe coming in and three coming out). You can check.this n yourself but if you don't know what your doing you're in for a bad time. Heat pumps when they fail default into heating mode. Have a tech come out and check. Probably an easy fix, but since there is high voltage involved i don't recommend you do it yourself.

usually with AC units this is conducive to having to recharge the unit. if you dont feel comfortable doing this youll need a tech to come out and do it for you.

check to make sure its still properly draining the condensation from the unit and its not clogged also

what kind of AC unit is it?
