Damaged my trackpad cable

Hi! Sorry for necroing this, but my MacBook Pro Late 2011 has exactly the same problem! It started to happen after my trackpad’s flat cable broke. Is my board faulty now? Or is it worth trying to replace the flat?

Update (09/29/2020)

Hello Dan! I had necro’ed an old post and it got merged I guess (it was the only case similar to mine in my whole search). So here we go:

I bought this MacBook Pro 15 Late 2011 from a friend. It was overheating, so I bought a new thermal paste to apply. Everything was working fine though, and in the proccess I accidentally broke the trackpad’s flat cable. Sad, but it’s ok cause it’s replaceable. I would use an USB mouse in the meanwhile, but now my keyboard is semiresponsive: if I type fast, it detects only some keys, like it is lagging. On Keyboard settings, the option “Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys” is blinking. I read from the post I originally commented on that it could be a faulty board, due to overheating. But before taking a new step, I’d like to know if it is worth trying to replace the flat cable. Thanks!

@andrerp - How about giving us the full story. Just like reading a book jumping to the last chapter won't tell you all the twists and turns in the story.

Start from what happened at the start and what actions you took. The more detail the better!

Did you replace the cable yet? You really need to do that.

Your system goes into CPU Safe Mode, Basically, the CPU clocking is reduced to prevent the system from overheating as its lost access to one or more sensors.

Lets run the onboard diagnostics to see what pops for an error. Restart your system and press the D key to enter.

Reference: Mac startup key combinations

@danj No replacement yet, I wanted to run the test first. I got a 4SNS/1/c0000008:TSOP--124, which I looked up and found out it’s related to overheating. Maybe I need a better thermal paste? Anyway, I think I’m going to buy the flat cable today and while I wait for delivery I’m going to look for a good thermal paste too. Any tips? Also thanks for all the help so far

TSOP is a thermal sensor error within the Trackpad cable. The sensor is just at the end where it connects to the trackpad.

So you do need to replace the cable to get the system back to working properly.

As I explained your system is running in reduced clocking CPU Safe Mode! Which explains your trackpad pointer being jumpy now!

You may want to get a good thermal monitoring app like TG Pro That will allow you to see whats happening! A common issue I see is people over do the thermal paste or use the wrong type.
