Failed logic board. How can I access Fusion Drive contents?

The machine has failed in a way that makes it unusable (shuts off when in use, soon after powering on). I believe the logic board has failed as I have replaced the display and the power supply and the machine is still unusable. Now I just want to recover the data and transfer it to a new machine. Unfortunately the original machine has a Fusion Drive, so I don’t think I can migrate the data by removing the HDD and SSD and connecting them to another system externally using enclosures. But I also can’t use Target Disk Mode to transfer the data because the original machine won’t stay powered on. Can anyone offer some advice? I just need to recover the data. Thank you!

Sorry to necro this. Was this ever figured out?

I have the exact same problem. Failed iMac 2017 logic board, took out the 3tb HDD portion of the fusion drive. Tried to mount on a new iMac and got the error ""Could not mount 'disk2s2'. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930868"

First aid runs fine on the parent disk "disk2" and says "The partition map appears to be OK" - But I cannot run first aid on "disk2s2" because it won't mount

@marcopolos - Sounds like the HDD is failing. Have you made a backup and maintained it? If not you could try using Target Disk Mode using a second Mac to access what you can and then look at replacing the drive.

Fusion Drives can be tricky!

It depends if the system shutdown cleanly and the HD its self is not damaged. You don’t need to worry about the SSD as its only a cache drive to your HDD. All of your data is on the HDD. At worst you have a few corrupted files which didn’t get a chance to finish writing back.

Take the HDD out and connect to a working Mac using a SATA to USB adapter cable for a 2.5” drive. If you have a 27” model you’ll need a powered adapter as the 3.5” drive pull to much power from the USB port.

Make sure you are using the same or newer macOS on the system which is trying to recover the files.

Hmm, this doesn't seem to work. I removed the 2.5" HDD and connected it to a MacBook Pro running Catalina using a SATA to USB cable. It shows up in Disk Utility as an unmounted disk labeled "disk2s2". Attempting to mount it gives the error "Could not mount 'disk2s2'. (com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930868.)"
