How bad is this Hinge situation on my Laptop?

(The lid itself doesn’t seem damaged)

  • This happened on back-right side of my laptop. 2 years ago I accidently banged it against a wall. It wasn’t that bad (these images are from 2 days ago), so I left it, because the parts would shift back when I pushed the panel back in (it wasn’t as bad as in these pictures).
  • But just a few days ago, I tried to close my laptop only to notice that the damage has greatly increased, and that the panel on this corner is coming off (the rest of the laptop is completely fine).
  • Also, as I attempted to close it, a nut and a bolt ejected itself out of it, I’ve kept them safe just in case, but I have no idea how they relate to the issue.
  • As far as I can observe, there are no software of electronic issues that have cropped up because of the damage, although I’m afraid the optical drive might get damaged if this keeps on.
  • I’m not gonna attempt any DIY if the issue is too complicated, but can anyone tell what the !&&* is going on so I can take further measures to lessen the damage?
  • (I’ve added pictures of the top panel)

Hi @darthkitten ,

Here’s the hardware maintenance manual for the laptop.

Go to p.52 to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the upper case.

The hinges screw into the upper case. If the screw mounts are broken etc you either have to replace the upper case or contrive a method using nuts and bolts (ugly) to hold the hinges inplace.

If you want to replace the upper case, here’s a link to find the appropriate part numbers for all the parts for the laptop.

Type Ideapad 330-17IKB in the search by product name search box, select the applicable model variant, (either DK or DM version), then click on Select Commodity > C-cover with keyboard to find all the upper case part numbers.

Locate the part number for the upper case applicable to your particular model (sometimes it is printed on the underside of the cover if you wish to verify that you have the correct number) and then search online using the part number only to find suppliers of the part.

Ok so I can see where the bolt is supposed to go, and I can see where I have to place the nut. Will attaching that keep the hinge in place?

@darthkitten

Might depend on how strong the plastic still is around it. There's a bit of weight in a lid which is all resting on the two hinges and add to that movement as well.

This link may provide some more information as to what others have done in a similar situation

Laptop body damaged, right screen hinge loose, might fall apart

さんによる

@jayeff so essentially, once that is completed, can I use an adhesive to keep the panel in place. I don't think the upper panel is held by screws, rather it is held on by adhesive .

I'm sorry to nag, but I really need a reply on the last comment. It's essential that I scrutinize everything.

@darthkitten

I misread before, I thought it was the hinge mounts on the upper case that were the problem.

If you look on p.58 you can see that the LCD panel is held in by the hinges at the top and bottom of the LCD panel. If the lid hinge bottom screw mounts are damaged then perhaps tape might work but they may be too thick and the panel may not sit flush etc.

You may need a new lid. Use the parts link to find the part number etc.

The case is damaged! Having parts falling out is not a good sign ;-{

Replacing the case is a large job. The best you can do is find a second one which needs repairs so you can swap over your good parts to it to get it going. Otherwise time for a new system.

The case itself has no cracks or any damage to it. I feel like something internally is pushing up on the panel. I've seen similar situations on YouTube. I think if you can somehow remove the panel, fix whatever the problem is to the inside, you can use some sort of adhesive to stick the panel back on. Although, I'm not an expert. This is pure observation.

Another thing is that when the screen is at a certain angle, the parts come back neatly. I still feel this isn't a hopeless case.

Sure a bit of glue will glue back the broken handle to my china cup too! Sadly, that's wishful thinking!

Take the system apart you'll see the mounts are snapped. I had a friend with the exact same problem as the case area in the right side is not strong. There is little one can do to fix it other than replacement. Look for a another system to steal the case from is the best you can do.

What do you mean by base case? Nothing other than the internal stuff looks inherently damaged.

Take it apart you'll see

I had the same problem. Soldering the broken hinge inside will solve the problem
